Thrifty Threads: Casual Chic

Posted On Monday, March 12th, 2012

I rarely wear flats. I actually feel naked without a heel and I know a lot of petite ladies who feel the same, but sometimes you find a flat shoe or boot that’s so amazing, you don’t care if it doesn’t add a few inches to your height. And sometimes your feet just need a break! Well, that’s exactly what happened when I found a pair of zig zag flat boots at the Salvation Army a few weeks ago. The design was so fly, I couldn’t pass them up.

The weather in NYC has been a bit mild lately and there’s nothing I love more than throwing on a pair of comfy shoes, fitted jeans and a jacket for a day of thrifting, brunch or hanging with friends. But of course an outfit doesn’t have to be boring simply because it’s casual.

Thrifty Threads 365: Five Month Review

Thrifty Threads 365, looking fly on a dime

Another month gone and another month that I can only thrift shop and spend a max of $50 on secondhand clothes and accessories. My Thrifty Threads 365 challenge is at the five month mark and for February, I stuck to my budget. Yay for me, since last month I went over budget by $23.

I haven’t had too much time to shop but over the past two weeks I snagged a few goodies and I have to say I absolutely love everything I purchased. Since I can only spend $50, that forces me to only buy things I would regret leaving at the store. Fun, statement pieces that help elevate my wardrobe.

I’m a serious heels and stiletto lover but I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of flat boots and luckily I found them at the Salvation Army {46th St. between 10th and 11th in NYC}. These zig zag boots are just everything to me and the $10 price tag made me do a happy dance.

Thrifty Threads: Fall Foliage

thrifty threads, looking fly on a dime Fall can be a tricky time to dress. Or at least it has been as of lately. One day it’s a brisk 45 degrees and you’re bundled up and the next it’s in the low 60s and you only have to step out of the house wearing a blazer. And this week has been no different.

Though the weather didn’t require a heavy coat, it was a little too chilly for a bear leg. So I whipped out the wardrobe staples ever woman needs: leather coat and tights.

Everything in my outfit was thrifted, except the tights and booties.

Thrifty Threads – Nate Berkus Show

Looking Fly on a Dime on Nate Berkus show

Hopefully by now you guys caught my second appearance on The Nate Berkus Show {I’ll post a link soon for those who may have missed it}.

For those who saw the program, you asked what stores I went to for the $25 makeovers and the thrifted designer looks. Of course I went to my favorite stores in NYC: Salvation Army on West 46th St, Goodwill on East 23rd St. and Buffalo Exchange on West 26th St. The $1 Gucci top I found was from the Goodwill Outlet where clothing is just $1.69 per pound.

And the next question you wanted to know was what I wore and how I snagged an Armani blazer for 83 cents.

looking fly on a dime, housing works buy the bag sale

I’ve always been a fan of bright denim, even before it was trendy. Well, I’m a fan of bright anything, so when I found a pair of purple jeans at the Housing Works Buy the Bag sale, I threw them in the bag.

Instead of pairing with a simple black top, I threw on the vintage silk top {also from the Housing Works sale} and a canary yellow Banana Republic cardigan. The colder weather is no excuse to store away the bold colors.

I realized my entire outfit, accessories included, was thrifted. The entire look was less than $20.
