Essence Music Festival, State of StyleFor years I had been trying to make it to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival. I always heard nothing but great things about the 3-day event and it's always around my birthday. Last year, I finally made it to EMF and it was everything and more! Parties, great music, food and cheap alcohol, what's not to love? And of course I'm heading back this year.
But if you haven't booked your flight or hotel, you're not totally out of luck. Using your sense of style can actually help you win round trip airfare for two, four night accommodations at a New Orleans hotel, two tickets for each night of the Essence Fest concerts {the lineup includes some of my faves, like Mint Condition, Emeli Sande and Beyonce}, two VIP Experience tickets and ground transportation.

Housing Works Buy the bag sale, thrift store warehouseThere's something so beautiful about dresses from the 40s, 50s and 60s. The silhouettes flatter a woman's figure all while being classic and refined. So I was amazed when I came across a gorgeous dress at Housing Works Buy the Bag.The print. Halter neck. Full skirt...but it wasn't vintage. It was a modern Anne Klein frock. Either way, I loved it and scooped it up {psst: Housing Works Buy the Bag offers clothes for $25 per bag, so this cost less than a buck!}.I'm not a fan of head to toe vintage {it can be too costume-y for me} and the dress was two sizes too big, but styling it was super easy.

DSC_0599I can't wait for spring to arrive on Wednesday. Seriously, I'm over the cold NYC weather. Though some people tend to wear more drab colors in the fall and winter, I'm all about wearing my brightest threads any time of the year. And I think I actually wear even bolder tones during colder months just to perk my mood up.This past weekend, I threw on a ton of blue, red, pink and colors in between for a fun look. My vintage Mickey sweatshirt and Laundry by Shelli Segal trench are both from Housing Works Buy the Bag at just $1 each.Check out this week's Thrifty Threads. And I'll even show you how to give your classic trench coat a little update.

I'm having a love affair with sweatshirts {see my last Thrifty Threads: Sweatshirt Chic post}. This is pretty strange for me because I normally think of sweatshirts as being frumpy and sloppy. But I've seen the error of my ways.
So when I came across a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt at the press preview for the Housing Works Buy the Bag shop in Brooklyn, I knew I had to have it. And when I looked at the label, I realized it was vintage! Not bad seeing as how it cost about $1 {a bag full of clothing is just 25 bucks and I was able to stuff about 20 pieces in a singel bag}.

A good heel, specifically a patent pump, is a must in every woman's wardrobe. But you know what a fall/winter footwear essential is? The flat boot. When it comes to versatility, there's nothing better than this gem. Rock it with skinny jeans or a fitted dress and it's suitable for a night out or an afternoon of running errands.I wanted to wear the Free People dress I picked up on my recent trip to TJ Maxx but since the frock is short and form fitting, I toned it down a bit with my trusty flat boots from Deb Shops.
