Thrifty Threads 365, looking fly on a dime

It's the monthly review of my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge, a full year where I only purchase a maximum of $50 in thrifted clothes and accessories.  I'm four months in to the challenge and this month, I went a little overboard.I spent $73! Yeah, I went way over. But last month I only spent $10 so I like to rationalize that this was kinda like I spent in January what I didn't spend last month. Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.Though I went over my allotted amount, I scored a ton of great pieces I really love.

Winter's finally arrived and it's absolutely freezing on the East Coast. Besides being uncomfortable, the colder temps can make dressing a bit tricky, especially if you want to dress up for a night out...and you're relying on public transportation. Last weekend I attended a post-wedding toast for some colleagues and I was determined not to let the weather cramp my style.

So I grabbed my favorite winter coat {faux fur collar LOFT coat from the Salvation Army coat sale}, bright tights and brocade style pumps. I had a lace dress underneath but it was the coat, tights and shoes that really kept my look fun and playful. And I was actually warm.

In October I spent $48, $25 in November and for December...I only spent $10! Yup, just $10. I've been so busy that I haven't had time to thrift. I planned on going to one of the Housing Works Buy the Bag sales but that didn't happen. However, all winter I've been on the hunt for some high heel boots. I didn't have much time to shop so I ventured to East 23rd Street {between 2nd and 3rd Avenues} where there are multiple thrift stores on the same block so if it was a bust a one store, I could quickly move on to the next.

Depending on the shape and length, it can swallow up your figure and be anything but flattering. But when I was invited to the Loehmann's fall preview a few months ago, one of the items I found was an awesome Ellen Tracy cape. I wasn't sure what I'd wear it with but I was willing to try the trend. And I'm so glad I did.The camel color compliments everything in my wardrobe and the belted waist keeps from making my frame look shapeless.looking fly on a dime, how to wear a cape

For as long as I've been blogging {two years} and as long as I've been thrift store shopping {at least five years}, I get the same questions related to thrifting. I've done thrift shopping frequently asked questions before but I'm compiling the answers again for anyone who's new to the blog as well as adding some additional info.Q: How do I find a good thrift store in my area? A: Thrift stores aren’t created equally, so it’s really a matter of trial and error. It takes time to find the store that’s best for you. Take a drive or walk around your area to scope out secondhand shops, ask friends for referrals and visit websites for national chains like Salvation Army and Goodwill to find a location near you. And be sure to check out The Thrift Shopper, it’s a national directory of resale shops.
