thrifty threads 365 challenge, shopping challengeAnother month down, so it's time to recap my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge {a full year where I only thrift shop for clothes and accessories, no new items}. For May I completely went over my budget because I was thrift shopping in San Francisco. So I was determined to keep my $50 limit in check for the month of June...and I did.

I almost made it through the entire month without buying anything but I did a brief interview and photo shoot for USA Today at the Salvation Army and I couldn't leave without buying something.

Looking fly on a Dime, H&M chiffon dress

Late last week we experienced a heat wave in NYC and besides being uncomfortable, it made getting dressed a bit tricky. Though the heat had me ready to walk around the city in the buff {it's totally legal for women in NYC to be  topless in public. Who knew?!}, obviously that wasn't going to happen. And I had to head outdoors to film my Savvy Shopper segment for WPIX. So that meant keeping cool while looking cute.Clingy material is a no-no when temps start to soar, so I grabbed my H&M  frock from Salvation Army. It's breezy, bright and the rosette details at the waist add a nice touch.

You've been there before. You check out a thrift store you've heard about or maybe you just randomly stumbled upon it. But after a few minutes, you walk out empty handed. Your thrifty little heart is crushed and you leave discouraged.Though I've been thrifting for about 10 years now, this still happens to me. Last year I checked out the Salvation Army on East 23rd St and walked away feeling it was the Worst. Thrift. Store. Ever. I couldn't find anything and the racks were half empty. I vowed to never go back to this whack location, but after a few months, I went back and I'm so glad I did.

Thrifty Threads 365, looking fly on a dime

Another month down and another month of my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge. If you’re new to the site and don’t know about TT365 {read up about it here}, it’s a year long quest where I can only purchase thrifted clothes and accessories. The only new items I can buy are undergarments {obviously, I’m not going to buy secondhand undies} and I may wear new gifted items. Oh, and did I mention I can only spend $50 a month? Yeah, only 50 bucks.I've consistently stayed under my budget, except for one month, and for April I continued to stay on track. I only spent $40 for the entire month. I've actually been so busy over the past few months that I haven't had time to shop, which is a great thing for my wallet, but it sucks for my closet.Though I prefer dresses and heels, this past month I didn't find any frocks or pumps. But I did score some cute tops, shorts and a purse. Check out a few of my top thrifted picks for the month of April, including an item that only costs $4, but the original price tag says it was worth $120.

Fashion trends come and go but one thing is constant: no matter what the trend, you can find it at a thrift store. Some people still think of thrift stores as having crappy leftovers other people no longer see fit to wear. Sometimes that's true but other times, you find awesome, current threads. And because fashion is so cyclical, what was hot years ago is once again in style. While thrifting last week, I came across a few trends that I've seen on the runway. Instead of dropping major cash on an "it" item of the moment, you can save a ton by thrifting the trends.
