Get Pumped Up

Unemployment can wreak havoc on your waistline. Maybe you finally have time to work out and prepare healthy meals or maybe you fall at the other end of the spectrum and eat a box of Twinkies while watching “Maury” (I have done this, please don’t judge me). It’s been almost a year since I’ve been funemployed and in spite of a heavenly high metabolism, I gained a few pounds.

Luckily, I recently stumbled upon a few websites that provide free or discounted gym access.

Passbook: Sponsored by the American Health and Fitness Alliance, The Passbook, offers tickets to hundreds of gyms, spas and yoga and dance studios in major cities. Some individual passes are good for an entire month! You can enjoy the benefits of a gym (classes, personal trainer, convenience) without the hassle of a contract. Though the book costs $75, it’s valued at more than $3000.

Gym Ticket: Enter your zip code and you’ll get a list of local spots (Crunch, Equinox, Gold’s, etc). that have free guest passes. You can even perform a search based on classes you’d like to take, such as yoga or kickboxing. With more than 20,000 fitness centers in their database, you can try a new gym darn near every week…for F-R-E-E!
