Why Now Is the Best Time of Year to Thrift

how to find a thrift store You never know what you’ll find when you go thrift shopping, but if there’s a time of year you really want to go thrifting, it’s now and over the next month. Typically, the inventory can be awesome or a bust.

But right now, a few things make this prime time to hit up your local secondhand or vintage shop.

If you’re like me, you’re gearing up for the new year by tying up loose ends and cleaning your home from floor to ceiling. And part of cleaning involves clearing out your closet. Last weekend I unloaded more than 20 pieces of clothes and donated or added them to my online shop.

The end of year usually equals people getting rid of the old and making space for the new. Their “old” tends to get donated. And just because it’s unwanted doesn’t mean it’s a piece of crap. And don’t think you’ll only find clothes and accessories. The holiday season is a big time for electronics and big ticket items, so as people get new televisions, computers, etc, they pass down the old.

Spring and summer {big moving months} are also great times to thrift, but the end of year also provides a financial reason to give.

When you donate clothing, you’re eligible for a tax write-off and many people are scurrying to get those tax receipts before the calendar year is out.

Benefit from other people’s castoffs and tax write-offs by dipping in to your local thrift shop. If you’re new to thrifting, be sure to check out my Thrift Shopping 101 and Thrift Shopping FAQ, where I tell you how to find a thrift store, my favorite stores in NYC and more.

And of course, check out my online shop. I uploaded new pieces {dresses, vintage skirts, blazers, etc.} and have a ton of goodies for next month. You can even get 20 percent off until 1/10/13 using code HOLIDAY.

Great tip, I just hit up my Value Village today. I bought a few summer pieces and got a vintage jumper for 0.40 because the chic couldn’t find the tag..
