Thrifty Threads: 90s Vintage Dress

looking fly on a dime vintage dress Last week was my Best Dressed Madame event that I hosted during Essence Music Festival and we had an amazing time. Along with my co-hosts Carmen from Lipstick Fashion Mascara and Tiffini of Atlanta Tastemaker Magazine, the night was full of drinks, light bites and fashionable fun. I’ll have a full recap for you next week, but for now, let’s just focus on what I wore.

Our event was held at May Baily’s Place at the Dauphine Orleans Hotel. The bar used to be a brothel {cheeky!}, so our theme was all about dressing up in an over the top, sassy, fun way. I kept my look fairly subdued since I’d be hosting, but I didn’t hold out on the glamour.

I dug in to the depths of my closet and pulled out the vintage 90s dress I scored from Clothes Contact. I visited this vintage shop last year when I was thrifting in San Francisco and it was like walking in to a fashion lover’s dream. The clothes were priced at $10 a pound and divided by era {70s, 80s, etc.} and occasion {disco, prom, Golden Girls, etc.}.

how to wear vintage, mix vintage and modern

Though the frock was all black, the added details like a back slit and lace bodice with chains were perfect for the evening. Vintage earrings and a thrifted clutch rounded out the accessories.

Pewter heels, nine west pewter cut out sandal

For the footwear, I threw in modern cut out sandals I scored earlier this year from a Nine West clearance sale.

Thrift Tip:
Be sure to check shops in your area that price clothes and accessories by the pound or bag. These places give you serious bang for your buck. And if you’re in New York, I hope you’ll sign up for my next Thrift Shopping Tour on 7/20. We’re heading to the Goodwill Outlet where clothes are just $1.69 per pound!
