Cubicle Chic: What To Wear When It’s Literally Freezing Outside

It happened to me last week. I quickly checked my weather app before getting dressed and saw the high was going to be in the 40’s. I was excited to not have to wear my down coat or boots for the first time in what seemed like an eternity. However when I got off work, well after the sun had set, my poor legs, covered only in thin tights, almost gave out while trekking to the subway. It was 28 degrees and I was literally underdressed for the occasion.

Don’t be me. Instead follow these simple style solutions. Here’s how to dress for a polar vortex.

One cold weather trick that New Yorkers swear by is the heattech line from Uniqlo. They have tons of basic pieces, ranging from sweaters to leggings, in a wide assortment of colors made with a special fabric that keeps you super warm and locks in heat. And this pink sweater goes for just $31. Pair with trousers, a wool blazer from H&M and foldover booties. Add in fun touches like this cross body bag and chevon earrings.

For those of us who just have to wear dresses, don’t suffer in your opaque tights. Go for a pair of fleece lined tights like these from ModCloth. The striped dress, tall boots and bright scarf have such a Parisian feel. Simple, yet sophisticated accessories like a top handle satchel and black and gold studs are all you need.

Lastly, go for a rustic chic look go with this ultra cozy shearling-lined cardigan. Add in a heather sweater {under $20 at the Gap!} and skinny leg trousers from Michael Kors. Finish off with earthy touches like these gold studs, burgundy bag and brown booties by Seychelles. If you still need extra warmth, layer on the fleece tights from the previous outfit underneath your pants.

How are you keeping warm this winter? Are there items you stay away from because it’s just too cold?
