The Best Days to Thrift Shop

“Patrice, when’s the best day to thrift shop?”

Well, the answer isn’t necessarily so cut and dry. The ever changing inventory at thrift shops means it’s a crap shoot any time you visit. However, I have found there are a few days I tend to strike gold. If you feel like you never find anything while thrifting, these days may just up your odds of finding a serious thrift store score.

Sale Days
I’m a huge advocate for savings on top of savings, so for me, visiting a thrift store on its designated sale day{s} is a no brainer. Yesterday I went to the Salvation Army because Wednesday is Family Day and most garments are half off. Stay tuned for my thrift haul {I scored 11 items for $35!}. While you’ll save even more, be prepared to deal with a bigger crowd. So as long as you’re ok with a crowd, visit on a sale day. This varies by store so simply ask the associates what days are their designated sales and if your shop is on Twitter, do yourself a favor and follow them. They occasionally announce last minute deals that can be music to your ears and a blessing for your closet.

Early in the Week
While most people thrift shop on the weekend, I do everything possible to avoid weekends! And it’s not just because of the crowds. I think it’s safe to say a chunk of thrift shop donations occur during the weekend but the store’s staff needs time to process the items. This usually doesn’t happen until Monday or Tuesday…so that’s when I shop. This is when those weekend donations are tagged and available for purchase. It’s totally understandable that you might not have the same amount of time to thrift during the weekday as you would on the weekend, but even if you just swing by for 30 or 45 minutes {or your lunch break, like me!}, that’s all you need.

[bctt tweet=”When to thrift shop: early in the week is when weekend donations are tagged and on the sales floor. “]

Thrift shopping is like a box of chocolates, so you never know what you’ll get. But my experience has proven the days above can help better your odds.

Do you have a favorite day to thrift shop? Are you more successful on the weekday or weekend?

I found your blog after thrifting for the first time last summer. Your advice is dead on and has taught me that thrifting is an awesome way to recreate/ enhance your your look “on a dime”.

On a sappy note, I have been out of work for a bit but thrifting and your blog have been my getaway and honestly two of the very few things that have inspired me during my job search. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your blog! You really keep me going. I’m certain you inspire others in more ways than you know. I hold on to the hope that sooner or later I’ll be able to wear my fabulous finds to my awesome new job. Thank you!
