I’m sure you made resolutions related to work, relationships and health, but what about your fashion resolutions? 2017 is here, so there’s no better time to think back to what you wore last year how you want to rock things this year!
Below are seven fashion resolutions that will elevate your style game for 2017.

Plan Your Outfits in Advance
If you always find yourself scrambling every morning to find something to wear, then your New Year fashion resolution should be to plan your outfit the night before. I know some people who plan a week’s worth of looks, but feel free to just start one day at a time. Take 10 minutes the night before to map out your look, all the way down to shoes and accessories. This 10 minute prep at night can save you tons of time and frustration in the morning.
Take a Shopping Break
Taking a break from shopping should be on everyone’s list of style resolutions. A blogger telling people to take a break from shopping? *gasp* But seriously, sometimes people shop with no focus or clear vision. How can you keep shopping if you can’t even define your personal style?
Shop Other Departments
One of the pieces of style advice I mention in my book, Looking Fly on a Dime: How to Find Fabulous Fashion at Any Thrift Shop & Make the Cheap Look Chic, is to shop different sections of the department store or thrift shop. Don’t be afraid to venture into the men’s department, as this is where you can find great button downs, boyfriend jeans and more.
Stop Overpacking
I’m heading to the Bahamas in a few days and I’m already thinking what I should pack. Rather, I’m thinking what I won’t pack. As the queen of the carry-on, I’ve become super strict about only bringing the necessities. And if you find yourself with overflowing bags and items you never wear on vacation, then you need to check out this hack for how not to overpack.
Wear More Color
I love to dress like a pack of Skittles, so no surprise I would suggest wearing more color. But even if you wear neutrals on a daily basis, try to switch things up a little bit. No, you don’t have to wear head to toe color, but maybe a colorful statement necklace or patent pumps for work? Even the slightest pop of color can take your style over the top.
Ditch the Clothes that Don’t Fit
While this might seem like a no-brainer, I know many women who continue to store clothes in their closet that just don’t fit. Say it with me, “my new year fashion resolution is to get rid of clothes that don’t fit.” And by “fit” I mean clothes that are either too big or small or even items that just don’t “fit” with your new style. If it no longer works for you, say goodbye once and for all.

Invest in One Major Piece
Fast fashion is cool, but sometimes you have to start investing in clothes that will be in your closet for years to come. Just think of what you wear a lot and how much money you can save by investing in a higher quality piece that won’t have to be replaced. For example, if you live in a part of the world where winters mean frigid temps, a camel wool coat might be a perfect fashion investment.
Wear What Scares You
Fashion should be fun, so why not wear at least one thing that may have initially made you scratch your head? My style resolution for last year was to experiment more with jeans and that’s what I did. These vintage mom jeans initially scared me when I saw them at the Salvation Army. I’m only 5’2″ so I thought the high waist would swallow me up, the leg was a bit too tapered and I didn’t want to look too puffy in my mid section. But I said why not give them a shot? I rocked them with statement pumps {currently available for sale in my Poshmark closet!}, cuffed the hem and had fun. Take a chance this year. If you don’t like or love something, just take it off and try something else!
*Yes, I know I said seven and that’s eight! My resolution is to continue to be extra*
Cheers to another year of looking fly and having fun!
What’s on your list of 2017 fashion resolutions? Did you try something new for 2016 that you want to continue in 2017?

These are some great resolutions. I will try to incorporate the one about wearing something that scares you! As a new blogger I appreciate the resolution about going on a shopping break. I think that is a perfect time to get really creative with what you already own. Awesome content!!

      Thanks Janel!
Yes, last year I really embraced the idea of seriously taking a hiatus from buying anything new because I already had so many pieces in my existing wardrobe. It was such an eye opener!

Loved this post! It’s so hard as a blogger to cut bad habits (specifically over packing and never knowing what to wear). Thanks for the tips

So glad the tips were helpful! I totally understand cutting those bad habits. Sigh.
      Work in progress!

Great post Patrice. Until today I had decided that I would not make any resolution this year because I never keep them. I really think I can make a couple from this post and actually keep them. Thanks.

Awesome, I’m so glad to hear that Joyce. I know some resolutions can feel so daunting, but I really do think a few style resolutions are doable and fun 🙂

I recently used your tips on packing lighter. I was able to travel to Florida in December with nothing more than a oversized tote bag. As I packed, I forced myself to leave some things behind and to limit my outfits. Oddly enough, it was so liberating!!! I found the alternative use for contact lens cases the most helpful. Thanks a bunch for your blogs. I’m always on the look out for them.

Yay, that’s amazing!!! It really is such a freeing feeling to pack light. I just returned from vacation and I used all of these tips myself, especially the contact lens case hack for some beauty items.
