3 Reasons This is the Best Season to Thrift Shop

season to thrift shop, time of year to thrift shop

This weekend I continued my fall closet clean out and that included dropping off a huge bag of clothes and accessories to Goodwill.

I have a large wicker basket from Home Goods that I purchased for $7 and every few months I add clothes to be donated. Well, it was finally time to drop them off and pass along the great secondhand karma, because as much as I thrift, it’s important for me to give back.

And I know there are tons of other people dropping off major donations as well. This is actually one of the best season’s to thrift shop.

Summer months tend to be a great time to thrift shop {more people moving= stuff they don’t want = more donations}, but the holiday season can equal thrift store gold as well.

1. Seasonal Change
Anytime there’s a major change in temperature {i.e. summer to fall/winter}, women everywhere are putting away their lightweight clothes. And the clothes that don’t get stored away for the season end up being donated. So don’t be surprised at finding pieces that aren’t seasonal. You may feel a little silly buying shorts or sleeveless dresses when it’s 40 degrees out, but save them for next year.

2. Holiday’s Are Coming
Also, the upcoming holiday season means people are clearing out their closets to pack them full of goodies they’ll either buy for themselves or receive as gifts. It’s the simple out with the old and anticipating the new.

3. Tax Purposes
And finally, you’ll see a surge in donations for tax purposes. Anytime you drop off clothes or accessories, you can get a receipt to claim the donation as a charitable gift. Before the calendar year closes, some people will drop off those bags that have been collecting dust all year so they can get those receipts for 2013 taxes.

Be sure to check out your local thrift shops between now and the end of the year. Whether you’re buying seasonal or off-season pieces, the stores may be packed with some thrift store scores to update your fall and winter style.

What’s your favorite time of year to thrift shop? Is there a month or season you typically find amazing goods?
