16 Jan This “ugly” vintage suit was just $7. Here are 7 chic ways I styled it
I’ve had a colorful vintage suit on my thrift wish list for a while and my prayers were answered during a thrift shopping trip to Goodwill last month. Well, they were kinda sorta answered. I had a vision for a colorful vintage suit: a citrus or coral color with a structured jacket and wide leg trousers. That’s the image I had in my head.
However, the suit I found look a liiiiiitle bit different. It was a mixture of bright colors, had massive shoulder pads, and the skirt was an awkward length.
But you know what, for $7, I bought it anyway and styled it seven different ways.
Last month I visited Richmond, Virginia and had a blast thrift shopping. So during my trip to Goodwill, I found this $7 suit that came with a jacket, pleated skirt, and belt. I decided to buy it because I was confident I’d be able to style it.
And those are the thrift shopping keys: have a vision before you buy and keep an open mind.
When you just buy things to buy them, that’s how you waste money. And on the flip side, had I put the suit back because it wasn’t what I envisioned for my perfect suit, I would have totally missed out. Yes, the length of the skirt was weird and the shoulder pads had to go, but those were quick fixes.
In the Instagram video below, you can see how I styled this suit. Also, if you’re not following me on IG {@PatriceJWill}, do so! That’s where I share my thrift shopping trips and affordable finds.
Okay, back to the suit…
Because it was three separate pieces {top, skirt, and belt}, that just meant I had tons of styling options with either wearing everything together or splitting the pieces up.
I had so much fun with the suit and can’t wait to find more like it.
I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again. One of the things I adore about secondhand shopping is the opportunity to try out pieces that I would have normally passed by. The clothes are unique and there’s a low cost investment, so if you don’t love something, you’re not out a ton of money.
Also, those massive shoulder pads that I hated? Well, exaggerated shoulders are actually on trend this year. So see? This suit is ahead of the fashion curve!

Posted at 11:00h, 22 JanuaryI would like to add, I like colorful clothing as well not colorful and in my opinion the suit is rather nice.

Posted at 17:12h, 22 JanuaryThanks! I love the colors. It’s the bit awkward hem of the skirt and massive shoulder pads that might scare some people off. But all you need are a few tweaks to make it work!
