01 Oct Thrifty Threads – Harlem Nights
Last week I attended a birthday celebration and the theme was 1920s and 30s. We were asked to reference the movie “Harlem Nights” as inspiration for our attire. For the ladies, that meant pin curls, fringe, feathers, boas, pearls, etc. And for the gents, tuxes, fedoras, bow ties and scarves.
I knew people would go all out with the theme {and they did, in full on flapper outfits} but I wanted to maintain a modern style with a few 30s inspired elements.
I immediately thought of my recent purchase from Beacon’s Closet. The ruffles have a glam feel and I layered on pearls and a bright cocktail ring. My shoes were a moderate height, strappy heel. I wanted my purse to have a throwback feel so I dug in the back of my closet for a bag my cousin gave me. The short handle boxy purse had an awesome vintage-y appeal.
My cousin bought the purse in the 90s and I wore it in the 10s {how do we refer to this decade???} to a 30s party. Fashion really is cyclical!
Breakdown:
Dress: Beacon’s Closet, $12.95
Shoes: Michael Kors, gifted
Purse: hand me down
Pearls: flea market, $5
Ring: gifted
Week four of my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge (a full year where I only buy second-hand clothing) is down. Only 49 more weeks to go!
