07 Aug Thriftspiration: Accessories Are the Name of the Game for this Thrift Shopper
Thriftspiration is a series that puts a spotlight on readers who share their secondhand shopping tips and fun ways to style thrifted finds.
Name: Whitney
Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland
When and why did you start thrift shopping?
My grandfather introduced me to thrifting when I was 9 or 10. But I didn’t start thrifting for myself until about 4 years ago.
What three words would you use to describe your style?
Practical. Simple. Fashion-forward
How do you style your thrifted looks?
I like wearing comfortable clothing because my day-to-day life is pretty busy. So this look has that comfort factor that I look for when deciding what to wear. The outfit is a blank slate so to speak, but I was able to spruce up the look with simple accessories. I love accessories but I think it’s important not to go overboard.
What’s your best thrift store score {a standout garment or accessory you absolutely love or a cheap designer find}?
If I had to pick just one, I’d say this black and gold jacket. I saw it in the thrift store and stopped dead in my tracks. I knew it was going to be a little big on me, but I didn’t care. I had to have it. I’d never seen something more intricate and lovely and elegant. I received SO many compliments when I wore the item and people could not believe I thrifted such a beauty!
What are your favorite stores in your area {Baltimore} and why?
- For vintage designer clothing and purses, DeBois Textiles has the best deals.
- For plus-size items and the best shoes and jewelry, 2nd Avenue Value Stores in Columbia and Laurel, MD.
How do you care for the items you bring home from the thrift shop?
For jewelry and shoes, I use a cotton ball or Lysol wipe and wipe them down/out. I usually soak the earring backs in alcohol or just purchase replacement backs for the thrifted earrings.
What tips would you give to new thrifters?
Shop with a list, be patient and try it on! Thrift stores can sometimes be overwhelming so if you know what you are looking for, that’s half the battle. Be patient and keep looking—it may take a few trips to different stores, but you’ll find it. And try it on because once you buy it, 9 times out of 10 you can’t return/exchange it.
