what to wear to the beach

I hate to admit it, but I'm not a huge fan of summer. Though I'm a summer baby {born on July 1!}, the hotter temps make me pretty cranky. But one thing I do love is a weekend at the beach. The sand and the water is so relaxing and I really love any excuse to slip in to a bikini. But keeping cool and looking hot can be a bit difficult when it's unbearably hot.On days when the mercury rises {we just had a heatwave on the East Coast}, my motto is keep it simple and head to the beach.

Essence Music Festival, State of StyleFor years I had been trying to make it to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival. I always heard nothing but great things about the 3-day event and it's always around my birthday. Last year, I finally made it to EMF and it was everything and more! Parties, great music, food and cheap alcohol, what's not to love? And of course I'm heading back this year.
But if you haven't booked your flight or hotel, you're not totally out of luck. Using your sense of style can actually help you win round trip airfare for two, four night accommodations at a New Orleans hotel, two tickets for each night of the Essence Fest concerts {the lineup includes some of my faves, like Mint Condition, Emeli Sande and Beyonce}, two VIP Experience tickets and ground transportation.

rain day gear, rain boots
I'm so happy the weather is finally getting nicer and Spring has sprung. But you know what else that means? Spring showers. When the rain starts, it can put a serious damper on your outfit choices. The downpour means the shoes you really want to wear have to stay in the closet and some garments aren't appropriate for gusty winds. But you don't have to let the rain cramp your style.
Check out a few outfit ideas that are fashionable and functional for different occasions and styles. These four looks are perfect for a rainy day.

sequin dress
Once holiday shopping is done, the next hurdle is what to wear for New Year's Eve. Whether you're hitting the town with friends or having a get together indoors, you want to ring in 2013 looking your flyest. But of course you're not trying to spend a ton of cash on an outfit and you don't have to.
A dress is the easiest way to go as it's just one piece to slide in to versus coordinating a top and bottom. Though you'll inevitably take a ton of pictures in your beautiful dress on NYE, don't feel the need to ditch your frock after the clock strikes midnight.
Continue to get tons of wear out of it by dressing it down with the one item every woman has {or should have!} in her closet: a black blazer. Or layer a fitted long sleeve shirt over the dress and belt it to give it a new look.
Check out the gallery below for a dozen New Year's Eve dresses for all sizes. They range from glittery sequins to figure flattering wraps and they're all less than $100.

I know I promised part two of my San Francisco thrift shopping tour {check out part one here} but I had a reader ask me what I wear while thrifting and I tweeted her the photo above. I've briefly mentioned some tips on what to wear {especially if you're hitting up a hectic warehouse sale}, but this is my first time devoting an entire post to the best pieces to wear that will help you have an easy thrift shopping excursion.

The pic above is what I wore while shopping in San Francisco. Fitted jeans allow for comfort and make it easy to try a dress or slacks on over them. And I had a button down shirt with a tank underneath which let me quickly and easily remove them so I could try tops and cardigans on in the middle of the aisles. And of course flats are a must. Thrifting takes time and can be competitive, so there's nothing cute about teetering around in four inch heels. But as the weather warms up, I switch my thrift look up a bit.
