The Benefits of Wearing the Same Clothes Over and Over

The Benefits of Wearing the Same Clothes Over and Over

You may have noticed something about my style recently. Or maybe you haven’t. But if you follow me on Instagram, and especially if you follow my Snaps {be sure to follow @PatriceJWill}, then you know I’ve started wearing the same clothes over and over. For example: sometimes I wear the above dress twice a week {don’t judge me!}.

And I’m totally okay with this.

And surprisingly, wearing the same clothes over and over has some benefits.

Remember when I did that massive cleaning out of my closet? And remember when I did a follow up {So You’ve Cleaned Out Your Closet and Have Nothing to Wear…}?

Yeah, it’s been a journey.

Since my closet has been pared down, it makes getting dressed less time consuming. And it’s easier because I only have items in my closet that I love. But even that has yielded further, interesting results.

Over the last month I’ve been repeating the same clothes. Just take a look at my social media feed if you don’t believe me.

But exactly why am I doing this? Bottom line: if it ain’t broke, don’t fit it!

I’m sure you have clothes and accessories in your closet that make you feel great and you look amazing in them. Those are the pieces you want to really embrace. And it’s totally okay to wear them often. Like, really often.

You might think repeating outfits can feel like groundhog day, but that’s not the case. The key is to remix the look so it doesn’t look so repetitive. That can mean swapping out flats for heels, rocking a waist-defining belt or layering something over or under your favorite piece.

I kinda used to scoff at the idea of a capsule wardrobe, but now, it makes total sense and feels completely plausible. And that’s because if your base wardrobe is solid, you don’t need a ton of options and can easily mix and match.

Also, I’m thinking another closet purge might be in order. While I’ve considerably lightened my wardrobe since last year, I’ve still noticed a few pieces that haven’t seen much wear at all this spring or summer. And that means it’s time for them to go!

Do you have a go-to uniform you wear at least once a week? If you’ve cleaned out your closet, what have you noticed about your style?

Funny isn’t it how excessive clothing in your closet is some type of security blanket? Like having extra food in the pantry (that you may never eat). I just went thrifting yesterday and bought two jackets for fall, Granted, they were only $1 each, so I wasn’t breaking the bank, but I have so many jackets that I could wear a different one every day for a month with no repeats. I am going to do the backwards hanger trick starting September 1st, to see what actually gets worn this fall/winter season. And for those things I wear repeatedly, I am going to put a small colored rubberband on the top of the hanger ever time I wear those pieces to see just how many times I wear the favorites. By spring I will have the evidence (I need evidence apparently) necessary to do the final purge to create a small wardrobe.

    Love your blog Patrice!

      Thanks so much Liz!

And yes, a closet full of clothes/pantry full of food can seriously feel like a security blanket.

I love that you’re doing the hanger trick. And that’s a really great idea about using the rubber bands to see how often you’re wearing your faves 🙂 That’s so perfect!

I absolutely love this. I love the Project 333 challenge, where you pare down your wardrobe to 33 pieces each season. When you spend more on high quality clothing, you naturally look more stylish, even though you have less clothing. I love how you still thrift and manage to find amazing pieces, Patrice! I know I’d love to take a peak into your closet, and see what pieces fell in love with. Thanks for inspiring me to hone my style while still saving money. <3

      Thanks Dana!

My closet is much lighter now, but still pretty fab 🙂

I’m actually thinking of doing something similar to Project 33 for fall and seeing how that works out for me, because it’s essentially what I’m doing anyway.
