Ready, Set, Thrift! Recap

If you weren’t in NYC this weekend, well that sucks for you {just kidding!}. But seriously, you missed another awesome Ready, Set, Thrift! event. I hosted my second thrift shopping party at Housing Works Buy the Bag and we had a night of thrift shopping {$25 for a bag of clothing), raffles of designer and vintage goods, drinks, cupcakes and an informative panel discussion.
Here’s what you missed at Ready, Set, Thrift!

I wanted to do something a little different this time around, so instead of a straight-forward shopping event, we had a short panel discussion. Comprised of Monroe of Fashion Steele NYC, Helen of TracyChambers Vintage and NYC-based Keaton Row stylist, Angela, we chatted all things thrift and fashion.
I ended the panel by asking the women to share their best advice on how to thrift shop and here’s what they had to say:

Angela: don’t look at pieces as-is. Visualize how you can style them and don’t be afraid to venture to the men’s or children’s sections.

Monroe: have an open mind when you go to the thrift shop. Having an exact idea of a specific garment will lead to disappointment.

Helen: look for unique pieces. These are the items you’ll have in your closet forever and really elevate your look.

After our 30 minute panel, we got to the good part. The shopping! The crowd ranged from thrifting pros who love the thrill of the hunt to newbies who heard about the thrift shop and wanted to experience Buy the Bag for themselves. I love, love, LOVED that everyone walked away with at least one bag of clothes.
Though the night was all about shopping, I also wanted a light celebration for my book, Looking Fly on a Dime: How to Find Fabulous Fashion at Any Thrift Shop & Make the Cheap Look Chic, which was released last week. We whipped up specialty cocktails and had the most scrumptious treats from Tres Chic Cupcakes. I’m such a geek and I was so happy to see my logo and book cover on the cupcakes. But cutesy-ness aside, the cupcakes tasted amazing! My fave was the banana flavor, but the red velvet, strawberry and funfetti were also top notch.
Also, each of our shoppers went home with a tote bag and Nourishing Conditioner from ORS and SuperFruit Complex Body Lotion from Shea Moisture. Both are sure to keep your hair and skin moisturized for fall and winter!
Thanks again to everyone who came out and I can’t wait to host another event in NYC, as well as other cities. Stay tuned for those details!
