14 Jan Thrifty Threads: Cable Knits and Over the Knee Boots

It’s finally starting to feel like winter. Or at least for now it is. But before we reached 30 degree temps, I ditched my pants. Yes, I rocked my grandmother’s vintage knit sweater, a pair of fishnet tights and some over the knee boots. The look sounds a bit risqué {and maybe it is!} but it worked.

And for short girls who feel they can’t wear over the knee boots, think again! Read on to see how I pulled the look together and how you can wear OTK boots as well.

Over the knee boots get a bad rap for a few reasons. Besides being a bit, well, provocative {i.e. hooker-ish}, they can also be intimidating for petite women. The long boots can easily swallow up your small figure. But the key is to find the perfect boot that doesn’t go too high {mid thigh} and keep the rest of your look pretty simple. Also, matching your clothing to your boots isn’t a bad idea either. The monochromatic look automatically lengthens your frame.

And if you’re worried about over the knee boots coming off too spicy, steer clear of a really high heel {3+ inches}, pointy toe stilettos or shiny faux leather.

These particular over the knee boots were scored from TJ Maxx a few years ago and the purple suede style has a relaxed feel. The heel is about three inches and it’s square, versus a stiletto, which can be more difficult to walk in and sexier.

The rest of the look came courtesy of my grandmother’s closet {remember, raid your grandma’s, aunt’s or mom’s closet for free vintage gems}, a thrifted purse and some Payless tights.

For accessories, I went pretty simple with a cutesy cat hat, my grandma’s charm bracelet, a cuff from Lydell NYC and H&M earrings {I swear by H&M for accessories!}.

Style Tip: For added warmth, layer nude tights under fishnets.
