Style Equation: The Easy Way to Dress Up a Sweatshirt

style-equation-how-to-wear-a-sweatshirt-how-to-dress-up-a-sweatshirt Sweatshirts have been having a serious moment for a few years. They’re no longer just the sloppy, baggy, cozy shirt you wear around the house or to the gym. Sweatshirts can actually be pretty chic…when worn properly.

Last week’s Style Equation was all about getting dressed in 10 minutes on a cold day. This week I’m showing you a few ways to rock your sweatshirt in a fun, stylish way. It’s as easy as 1 + 2 + 3.

1. Of course you need the sweatshirt. All of mine have been thrifted! From a simple gray Hanes option or a vintage Mickey Mouse shirt, I’ve gotten major wear out of both. The fit should be loose without being too oversized, but not too snug. Play around with the right size that works for you. You can find a ton of options, especially in the men’s department, that cost next to nothing at the thrift store.

2. The key to keeping a sweatshirt from looking like a shirt you just threw on in haste? It’s all about a little layering action. My go-to is a chambray shirt. But any button down, especially a silky one, can work. Pull the shirt’s collar over the sweatshirt and/or add a bold necklace, which makes the neckline more interesting. You can also try a thin vest over your garments.

3. You can’t forget your bottom half! The general style rule is balance a bulky top with a slim fitting bottom {and vice versa!}. Skinny jeans or a pencil skirt work perfectly. Occasionally I like to switch it up and throw on something “fancier” like a sequin dress under the sweatshirt. Unexpected, but it works!

How do you wear your sweatshirts in a fun way? Is there a “style equation” you follow to make getting dressed easier?
