05 Jul Fashion Hack: Convert Your Bodycon Dress Into the Perfect Fitted Shirt
Last night I whipped out a head to toe thrifted look for a Fourth of July rooftop party and I also utilized one of my go-to styling hacks.
I converted a bodycon dress into a top! I’ve been doing this for years and if you’re looking for the perfect fitted shirt, here’s how you can do it, too!
Remember how important a thrift wish list is? Well, one of the items on my list is a bodysuit. I haven’t come across one that I absolutely love. So since I haven’t found it just yet, I just use a sleeveless bodycon dress as a substitute.
And how do I do it? Super easy! I actually did this a while back when Glamour.com challenged me to style one Forever 21 dress 10 different ways. Below you can see how it looks as a dress, as well as a few ways I rocked it as a top.
You would have never known that “shirt” was actually a dress!
The key is to find a dress that’s really fitted. If it’s too baggy then it will just look like an average shirt. But if you’re going for a bodysuit-like fit, then the dress has to be snug. Also, the material should be bulk free. This allows you to simply roll/fold and tuck the hem into your pants. Again, another key here is to neatly roll or fold the material when you’re tucking it {otherwise it will look like a bulge around your waist!}.

So, I did the same style hack last night when I rocked a thrifted bodycon dress along with a pair of thrifted Banana Republic shorts. The dress is a little too short and tight for my taste and I’d actually never wear it as a dress, but I loved the straps, which made it a perfect shirt!
One of the tips I suggest in my book {Looking Fly on a Dime: How to Find Fabulous Fashion at Any Thrift Shop & Make the Cheap Look Chic} is to envision a garment’s potential.
Like I mentioned, the dress itself was way too short for me to comfortably wear it, but I knew it would look great as a top. Never be afraid to play around with your clothes and make them work for your size and style.
Do you have any go-to fashion hacks? Have you ever turned a dress into a shirt?

Posted at 14:21h, 09 JulyI sew a bit, so I’ve converted many too-short dresses into cute tops , or cut off the tops and made skirts! It’s such an easy thing to do and transforms a “not quite right” item into something usable and wearable.

Posted at 14:04h, 11 JulyCan you show what that “neatly rolled or folded” dress looks like before it’s tucked into a shirt/pants/skirt? That would be very helpful.

Posted at 14:22h, 11 JulyHey Lina! Thanks for the comment. It’s really not much to see. It’s seriously just folding the hem neatly and tightly so there’s no bulk at your waist. I just wanted to mention the dress should be folded vs. just stuffing it down into your pants (which would lead to a lot of bulk around the waist and wouldn’t be as neat). I may try to do a YouTube video on this soon, so stay tuned!
