Cubicle Chic: How to Modernize Classic Pieces

Cubicle Chic: what to wear to work

We all know there are certain classic pieces that every working woman should own: a fitted blazer, a pair of suit pants and a black work dress, just to name a few. But after years and years of wearing them the same way, these pieces can often become stale. The great thing about timeless garments is how easily they can be updated.

In this week’s Cubicle Chic, we’ll show you how to modernize your classic pieces.

Cubicle Chic: revamp your classics for work

The first classic piece to be reworked is the blazer. It’s extremely versatile and adds polish to any look. An easy way to update your blazer is with a fun printed top underneath. Show your personality with this floral J. Crew factory top and a coordinating pencil skirt from Target {only $20!}.  Final touches like a structured bag, this one’s from Zara, and pointy toe pumps really modernize your look.

Next is the traditional pair of suit pants. Suiting pants can sometimes get a bad rep, but like the blazer, it’s all about how you style them. With these basic well-fitting pants from H&M {just $35 for a timeless piece}, it’s pretty easy to update your style with coordinating pieces and accessories. To keep up with this year’s pastel trend, add pretty pieces like this mint shirt and this edgy light pink belt from Scotch & Soda. To finish the look, add these simple, yet chic, nude pumps.

Cubicle Chic - keep your LBD simple and chic with gold accessories Finally, but most importantly, is the time honored little black dress, a wardrobe staple for women of all ages. By itself, the LBD is fairly simple, but one of the easiest ways to modernize this classic piece is with gold accessories. So no matter the trend, you can update your black dress every season with inexpensive, yet fabulous, pieces like this necklace from Nasty Gal, a linked bracelet or these intriguing two-tone hoops from Dorothy Perkins. And you can easily experiment with shoe trends or go with a tried and true pair of black pumps.

How do you keep your classics up-to-date and fresh? What items in your wardrobe could use some modernizing?
