13 Jun Here’s What Really Happens When You Clean Out Your Closet
It’s been a little over six months since I did my major closet purge. And when I say it was major, I mean major. I donated about a fourth of my wardrobe!
Since then, I’ve come to realize a few things about my style and wanted to share what really happens when you clean out your closet.
Closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. Have you ever felt that way? I did!
I was a thriftaholic and had amassed a ton of “stuff,” but it was really just that: stuff. And stuff that didn’t even properly reflect my personal style.
Fast forward to six months later and one thing has become clear: cleaning out your closet will make you more intentional with your future purchases.
If you spend three days cleaning out your closet {like I did!}, then you get super strict about what you’ll buy. All because you don’t want to accumulate more “stuff.” Instead, clothes and accessories have to earn a space in your home.
For me, this means I’ve thrifted, but only if I love, LOVE, something. Like this colorful dress or backless shirt below. Make clothes earn your money and closet space! That’s the only way to keep your closet in order.
Also, remember when I said cleaning out your closet can help you define your personal style? Yeah, it’s true!
I always defined my style as casual chic but my closet didn’t always reflect that. But now? My closet really does. I don’t buy anything unless it really can take me from day to night. I know that’s an overused phrase but it’s so important for me. That’s why I thrifted this two piece from Buffalo Exchange. It can be worn together or separately with other items in my closet. I first wore the skirt with a simple tee and canvas sneakers and weeks later rocked the entire set with heels for an on-air style segment I did. That’s major versatility!
One issue people feel they’ll run into is: I’ve cleaned my closet out so much and now I’m wearing the same thing over and over!
Well, let me tell you. If you’ve cleaned your closet out the right way, you’ll be okay with repeating looks. And that’s because you love the clothes so much. Again, your closet should just be what you looooove. So if you’re wearing your favorite jeans or pumps two to three times a week, no biggie. Just learn how to make your fashion uniform look unique, so even when you’re wearing the same thing, it doesn’t look like you are!
I’m interested to see what my closet looks like another six months from now. I think I might even get rid of a few more items!
Have you cleaned out your closet? What issues have you run into? Has it made you notice anything in particular about your style?
