Goodwill fashion show, looking fly on a dime

{I'm making a weird face, but everyone else looks amazing!}

Earlier this month, Goodwill contacted me about participating in a fashion show for disabled workers. Of course I jumped at the opportunity. You guys know I love Goodwill {my favorite locations in NYC are the 23rd St. Gramercy store and the Goodwill Outlet}. But I also love that the secondhand chain employs individuals with disabilities. October is National Disability Awareness month so Goodwill teamed up with NYC's Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities to put on a show.Goodwill wanted myself and four other bloggers to create looks for disabled employees. We pulled clothes from local Goodwill stores so the workers could have career appropriate attire. I shopped at the three-story Goodwill in East Harlem {2231 Third Ave.} to dress my two models, Craig and Yesenia.

One of Craig's favorite colors is blue so I wanted to put him in a bright top, dressy slacks and a patterned tie. And Yesenia preferred black pants, which are totally work appropriate, but I  gave her a stand out top, some accessories and nude pointy toe pumps.

Some people think vintage has to equal super expensive and I have to admit, I was one of those people. I stumbled upon Brooklyn Bleu while reading In Her Shoes and just knew I had to check it out. The boutique is by appointment only so I thought, oh no, there's no way I can afford this stuff. I was so wrong.Last Friday I made my way to Brooklyn for an appointment with Tenisha Light-Caba, she owns the boutique with her twin sister. The shop is on the second floor of a renovated brownstone and words can't even describe how posh it is. The lace and silk curtains, custom closets, super comfy chaise lounge made me feel like I stepped in my dream closet. {Seriously, I have pics on my vision board of what I want my closet to look like and this is pretty close to it}.

Anytime someone asks me how I would describe my style, I tend to say casual chic or dressy casual. On most occasions I don't like being too gussied up but I also love a few stand out pieces. Dressy trousers tend to make me think of a stuffy corporate environment, which is totally not my style, but I found a pair that I had to have during O So Chic's clothing swap party. Instead of rocking the pants as is, I cuffed them up and threw on a bright top and sparkly shoes for a more relaxed look.I love how the red/burnt orange Gucci top I snagged for $1 at the Goodwill Outlet stands out with the pants. Yes, Gucci for $1! Be sure to check in your area to see if there's an Outlet near you, clothes are priced by the pound and you can walk away with great deals.

I wanted to share some awesome news with you guys. Well, this isn't exactly "news" to some of you who follow me on Twitter or who like the Facebook page, as I've briefly mentioned it before. But, I'm now the Savvy Shopper reporter for WPIX-TV in New York. I've been working with the station for a few weeks now and I love it. Of course I inform people about thrift shopping but I also offer up general budget fashion and lifestyle tips.

By now I'm hoping you guys saw my appearance on last week's Nate Berkus Show. I gave you the behind the scenes look two weeks ago and I can't tell you how awesome but kinda weird it was seeing myself on television. I was nervous watching the show but pretty calm while I filmed. Strange, huh?On the show, I matched high end designer looks with finds from my favorite thrift stores in NYC {Salvation Army on 46th St and Goodwill and Housing Works on East 23rd St }. And then I dressed three women in head to toe thrifted outfits. The ladies wore items from labels like Ungaro, Tahari and Diane von Furstenberg, with their looks coming in at less than $20 each.One thing I didn't get to discuss was my outfit. A lot of you commented on the ruffled dress I wore so here are the details.
