I’m a Size 12?! Here’s Why You Should Ignore Sizes When Shopping

If you’ve been following my Snapchat adventures, then you saw my thrift shopping trip last weekend. I scored a dress, purse and four t-shirts for $20. But let’s get back to that dress. It was a size 12. I’m not a size 12. But it fit perfectly!

And this is exactly why you should ignore the size label when shopping.

I’m typically a size 6-8 and I’ve even been a 2 or 4 in some brands {don’t you just love vanity sizing?!}.

I spotted this black, slinky Perry Ellis dress and immediately looked at the size. Noticing the number 12, I put it right back. But something told me to think twice. I pulled the garment off the crowded rack and noticed that it didn’t look like a 12. I tried it on thinking it would be baggy, but it fit me perfectly! *sorry for the horrible lighting in the fitting room {and my bubble gum pink bra}.*

All this to say: don’t let a label deter you from trying something on. And this really applies when you’re thrift shopping.

If you’re thrifting a brand that’s new to you, your size just might be smaller or slightly bigger than what you wear in other labels. Also, vintage sizes are so off from modern sizing. So a size 12 back in the day might be today’s 8.

I know sometimes it’s a psychological thing and you tell yourself, “there’s no way I’m a size…” but get over that! It’s all about the right fit. Because the worst thing you can do is rock thrifty threads that don’t compliment your shape.

Do you focus heavily on sizes when you shop? Have you ever been surprised a smaller or larger size fit you properly?

I totally agree! I’ve noticed too that thrifted items may fit differently because they’ve typically been worn and washed which may alter it a bit.

    Love the dress, btw!

Thanks! And yes, the constant wear can certainly change the fit of garments.

I never shop without a tape measure and an index card listing the flat measurements that fit me best ( bust, waist, hip and inseam).
Size labels can be extremely misleading.

Great tip about the tape measure!
