images For the longest time I resisted Twitter. I thought it was only for self absorbed people who wanted to alert other self absorbed people to their comings and goings. Like seriously, do you need to know what I’m doing and more importantly, why do you care? But…I realized it actually has some uses.

Here are a few folks to follow on Twitter for deals and steals:

Travel
@Expedia, @Travelzoo, @Orbitz: These are just a few of the travel companies on the social networking site. Of course you can sign up for their weekly emails but they also tweet multiple travel deals on a daily basis. You can even send a DM (direct message) if you’re looking for savings to a specific locale.

@NYTimesTravel: I’ve always loved the Times’ travel section. Follow them for up articles and Q&As on the places you wish you were at.

@JetBlue, @SouthwestAir, @VirginAmerica, etc: I’m sure every major airline is tweeting away. If you have a specific line you frequently travel on, be sure to follow them. I really like @JetBlueCheeps. Every Monday they send out last minute deals. And earlier this summer I learned of Jet Blue’s awesome 30-60-90 sale via Twitter.

Shopping
Maybe you don’t have the time to visit every individual shopping site but you can have sales and promo codes delivered right to you from your favorite department store or online retailer, like @macysinc, @zappos, @kohlsdotcom.

Dining
There’s a chance your favorite restaurant (no matter how big or small) is on Twitter. @Pfchangs was recently giving away $50 gift cards to their followers and thanks to Twitter I  just realized one of my fave spots in Harlem (@societycoffee) has $2 mimosas at brunch.

And if there’s just one tweep to follow, it should be @CheepTweet. They scour Twitter to compile the best deals and steals, so you don’t have to.
