Transitional Style: What to Wear for 50 Degree Mornings and 80 Degree Afternoons

With 55 degree temps in the morning and 80 degrees by 2pm, it can be a bit confusing to get dressed in the A.M.. Yesterday I noticed some people in leather jackets and hoodies while I was in a t-shirt. This is to be expected when it’s still technically summer, but fall is just a week away.

Here’s how to dress for the varying degrees without having to carry around a jacket all day.

Leave the Jacket and Sweatshirt at Home
Seriously, it’s really not that cold. Maybe it’s a bit easy for me to say that because I’m always hot. But stepping out of the house with a jacket when the forecast calls for a high of 80 degrees is just impractical. The same goes for a bulky sweatshirt. You’ll be burning up by noon.

Go for Light Layers
Instead of a jacket, reach in your closet for light layers like a cardigan, chambray button down, vest or flowy duster. These are light enough that you can layer for warmth but they can also be removed quickly and stashed in your purse or tied around your waist.

Go for Light Materials
Light layers work wonders but so do light fabrics. I love a good leather or tweed moment, but I’m saving that for a day that’s consistently cold. Again, light pieces aren’t just ideal for layering, but your skin will thank you for the breathability.

Don’t Forget Your Scarf
I seriously feel scarves are one of the most overlooked, but awesome accessories. Throw it over your arms if you’re chilly on your morning commute or at the office. And a colorful or printed one can be a chic way to jazz up any look.

Peep Toes and/or Booties Are Your Friend
While the AM temps might be too frigid for open toe sandals, go for a bootie, especially a peep toe. Your entire foot isn’t out but there’s a bit of skin and a few toes are still playing peek-a-boo. It might be a bit too soon for leather over the knee boots. Just maybe.

How do you dress for the confusing weather?

Sorry but I usually just bring a light weight jacket/trench coat, or sweater/cardigan with me. I’m one of those who gets cold easily (I HATE the cold). As well, the train and my office is ALWAYS cold, so along with my lightweight jacket I have a sweater at my desk. Thank God my office is semi-casual.
