Thrifty Threads: Fall Foliage

thrifty threads, looking fly on a dime Fall can be a tricky time to dress. Or at least it has been as of lately. One day it’s a brisk 45 degrees and you’re bundled up and the next it’s in the low 60s and you only have to step out of the house wearing a blazer. And this week has been no different.

Though the weather didn’t require a heavy coat, it was a little too chilly for a bear leg. So I whipped out the wardrobe staples ever woman needs: leather coat and tights.

Everything in my outfit was thrifted, except the tights and booties.

I’ve been in love with this leather jacket since I found it at the Salvation Army coat sale {psst: another sale is coming up this weekend} and the silk shirt was one of my fave finds from the Housing Works Buy the Bag sale. The gold print kinda reminded me of the beautiful fall foliage.

Instead of basic black tights and booties, I went with grey. A monochromatic look always lengthens the leg.

Breakdown:
Jacket, necklaces, top, skirt: thrifted // Tights: Target // Booties: Payless

Week 9 of my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge {a full year where I only buy second-hand clothing} is down. Only 43 more weeks to go!

Thanks. I’m not sure where you checked, but leather jackets should be at all major retailers (affordable ones can be found at Macy’s, Gap, Burlington Coat Factory, etc). It may just be a matter of looking around for the right fit. I found mine at the Salvation Army.

I love how your lipstick compliments your face! 🙂  Any tips on choosing a complimenting pop of color like that?

Thanks! It’s really just trial and error. The shade is MAC Girl About Town. I just tested out a few shades to see what worked best. I think reds, pinks and corals look great on brown skin.

I have just been inspired!! Thank you!  I’ve been a manager of a thrift store in Florida for four years and love it, but sometimes I need a bit of a boost and you just gave it to me.  You were fantastic!

I am in love with tights this season. Thanks for showing us an outfit with such awesome tights and booties. I went the entire month of November in just skirts and dresses, so tights were abundant. I’ve always been leery of grey tights, but now I really want to try it. Thanks so much!

Thanks Lauren. Yeah, I normally stick with black tights but wanted to try something a little different! Now I’m all about grey, bright or patterned tights.

Hi, I have been following your blog for quite awhile, but I had never gone thrift shopping until the salvation army coat sale today.  I must say, it was a great experience.  Having already bought a coat this season, I just wanted to go to check it out.  (As I am a busy med student, I actually was free this weekend and could make it there.) At first, I thought I would be overwhelmed, but the experience turned out well.  I bought a wool coat from benetton and two handbags.  The adrenaline while searching and the excitement of a great find reeled me in.  I think I may take up a thrift shopping challenge of my own starting in January.  How often do you go thrift shopping? Is it when you feel like you need something or more so whenever you have time to browse?  I don’t live in the city so timing is probably going to be a little bit of an issue for me.  Also, my schedule doesn’t have a whole lot of free time because what little time I do have, I like to spend it with my family and boyfriend. Thanks a lot!

      Hi Kiran,
So glad you found some stuff at the coat sale this weekend. I tend to go thrifting whenever I have a free moment (which is pretty nonexistent lately, lol) but now I really go if there’s a big sale or I’m looking for something in particular.

Just wanted u to know u inspired me too look @ all my things & find new ways to revamp what I have by shopping thrift for a pop of something new.
I’ve used thrift to find vased to give w/a bouquet of flowers & the lady @ the store mentioned she buys plates there to bring to Potlucks so she doesn’t worry about getting her plate back & makes for a nice Host Gift.
