Thrifty Threads 365 Update

I wanted to check in with you guys since I’ve reached the nine month mark of my year long shopping hiatus. Woo hoo, I’m in the home stretch. I started my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge on September 1, 2010 and vowed not to purchase any new clothing or accessories {except underwear} for the next year.

I’ve found some amazing thrifted finds over the past nine months so as usual, I don’t miss shopping for new clothing because I consider my thrift store items to be “new” to me.

In the past couple of months, I’ve found…

A vintage dress from the Salvation Army for $5.

Vintage jumpsuit from Goodwill for $15. I can’t wait to wear this!

Strappy wedges for $8.

And I’ve loved incorporating my thrift store finds in to my existing wardrobe to create some fun, fly looks

The next time I check in with you guys, I’ll be nearing the very end of Thrifty Threads 365. Besides saving a ton of cash, this challenge has forced me to be more creative and put outfits together in new ways.

I know a few of you have joined me on the challenge and given up shopping for a few months. If you have, let me know how it’s going. Have you run in to any problems? How much cash have you saved?

I’m actually considering extending the challenge beyond the one year mark. Who needs new clothes when you have thrifting!

I’m still AMAZED that you have had such success with your thrift store finds! Part of me wants to take on a similar challenge (especially since I’m expecting my first child), however I feel like I never find anything in my size that’s super cute at thrift stores. Thus, I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. Who knows, the more good stuff you find, the more I may be encouraged to actually take the plunge! Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks Monique. I’m so happy I could inspire you. Trust me, thrifting takes time and patience, I’ve been doing it for a while so that’s why I tend to find great items. It’s also important to find a thrift store with a great selection which comes through trial and error.
      Congrats on the little one!

You should definitely join me! Though I’m doing it for a year, you can try it for a month or so and see how it goes. I know a year is a long commitment!

YES EXTEND the challenge!!1 Is it to late to join?? The only thing I need help with is finding the great places to thrift at…I reside in Bk, NY and I’ve been to Beacon’s Closet & The Salvation Army but I dont know how to truly go about looking for items. Ive come home with a bunch of odd pieces that dont go with each other :(…how do I thrift with a purpose??! (first time requesting a blog post lol yay!)

You kind of answered your own answer, if you’re looking for something specific you should “thrift with a purpose.” If you know what you want to add to your wardrobe (blazers, button downs, etc which are easy to find), then just purchase those instead of buying pieces that can’t really be worked in to your wardrobe.
