Thrifty Threads 365: Month Eight Update

Another month down so you know what that means: time for my monthly Thrifty Threads 365 check in.

For the month of April I only spent $40 out of my $50 budget. Well, I can’t say I faired so well for May but let me explain. I visited San Francisco for the first time last month and I hit up about half a dozen thrift stores {check out my San Francisco thrift shopping posts here and here}, so my $50 monthly budget quickly went out the window. Well, let me stop delaying and just reveal it.
I spent $130. Yes, almost three times over my budget. The 15 pieces ranged from high waisted shorts to fun frocks to a summer straw tote. But I’m not mad at myself. I had a great time in San Fran and I can honestly say I love every single piece I bought.
From my vintage night gown that I’m converting to a sundress, polka dot dress and hi low color block top.
There’s also my 90s prom dress I can’t wait to wear to a formal event.
I even wore the thrifted H&M dress and straw bag while speaking at the Rising Affluent conference a few weeks ago.
To make up for totally blowing my budget, I’ve decided to go on a shopping hiatus for the month of June. It’s going to be tough but I can do it, I think?  I hope. So wish me luck and say a prayer I don’t see anything I absolutely have to have.

Thrift tip:
I clearly violated one of my Thrift Shopping Commandments: stick to a budget. It’s so easy to go overboard while thrift shopping because the prices are so affordable and can be hypnotizing. So learn from my mistake, set a budget for yourself whether you’re shopping in your hometown or away on vacation. You can either set a limit per location {example: $30 for each store} or have an overall budget. Also, most secondhand stores accept plastic now, so it’s a good idea to just bring cash.

Do you set a budget for yourself when thrifting? If you joined in the Thrifty Threads 365 challenge {whether it was for the full year or just a month}, how’s the challenge going for you?

I love the pink dress. I don’t think you did too bad, especially since you got so much stuff. But I alwasy try to stick to a budget…that doesn’t always happen though 🙂

I have a monthly clothes budget, so yes I stick to a budget when thrifting (: That pink dress is quite the find–very on trend with the folding at the waist.

I really like the pink dress. Can’t wait to see how you wear the white sundress. I don’t think $130 is too bad, especially since you got a lot of pieces.

OH, I just love the slip you will be converting into a dress. I was doing well thrift shopping only until a few things came up and I had to hit up Ross 🙁 BUT, I’ll get back to thrifting only soon.

OMG I love your blog! I just found your blog on blackenterprise site.  I thrift store shop weekly. I have a sunday ritual where I hit up 3 places and you will not believe what I’ve bought.  I put myself on a budget recently. I won’t go over 10$ each visit. Last Sunday I spent $6 and the week prior was $10 for a long black brocade print double breasted coat. Great condition! It reminded of the black Gucci riding coat in their recent collection.  I will do the challenge with you for the next 4 months. My budget is $10. Keep you posted on what I find.  I can only image in New York all the goodies you find.

I love all of your dresses.  I am starting to feel inspired now…. but I still need a $200 budget, loll.
