Thrifty Threads 365: Five Month Review

Thrifty Threads 365, looking fly on a dime

Another month gone and another month that I can only thrift shop and spend a max of $50 on secondhand clothes and accessories. My Thrifty Threads 365 challenge is at the five month mark and for February, I stuck to my budget. Yay for me, since last month I went over budget by $23.

I haven’t had too much time to shop but over the past two weeks I snagged a few goodies and I have to say I absolutely love everything I purchased. Since I can only spend $50, that forces me to only buy things I would regret leaving at the store. Fun, statement pieces that help elevate my wardrobe.

I’m a serious heels and stiletto lover but I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of flat boots and luckily I found them at the Salvation Army {46th St. between 10th and 11th in NYC}. These zig zag boots are just everything to me and the $10 price tag made me do a happy dance.

After scoring the boots, I made my way to the dress rack at the Salv and scooped up a polka dot, wrap style frock for $7.

Last weekend I went thrift shopping with my girls Danielle {aka The Frugal Fatshionista} and Jasmin {aka Vintage Vandalizm} and we did some thrift hopping on East 23rd St. There’s a string of thrift stores within a two block radius {East 23rd St between 2nd and 3rd Aves} so we just went door to door.

At the Salvation Army, Danielle found a cropped sweater that’s just my style and size. The camera really doesn’t pick up its sparkly little details. {$7}

Unfortunately I didn’t find too many garments at the Goodwill, but I did see a pair of beige cut out Guess pumps that needed a home in my closet. They were $7.99 but because I redeemed my Goodwill Rewards Card points, they were actually free! Read up on the Goodwill Rewards Card and savings cards at other thrift stores.

Our last stop of the day {before heading to Coppelia for a yummy dinner} was Housing Works. Once again, I didn’t find any clothes I had to have, but I found a few accessories. I’ve been dying for a pair of cat eye sunnies and I can never have too many bangles. The glasses and bracelets totaled just $9.

So for the month of February, I only spent $33. This definitely balances out the fact that I went over budget last month.

If you’ve joined my Thrifty Threads 365 Challenge {only thrift shopping for a period of time}, feel free to comment below and let me know how it’s going.

    Hey Patrice, I’m definitely going to join your challenge and get a couple girlfriends together. I’m also amending your challenge little because I’m such a DIY maven, I’m going to say $75 per month everything thrifted or made (DIY).I feel 50 is a good cap, but I also feel like I’ll go over that $50 sometimes. So $75 I know I won’t go over. Love those zig zag boots, they look like a hot conversation piece. Thanks for inspiring me, I’ll send you some pics

    those zig zag boots are totally killer!

    this is such an inspiring challenge….. i have always been an avid and successful thrifter, but interspersed are trips to century 21 and tj maxx and j crew…… so, i spend more money than i need to.

    Hi Patrice,
    My birthday is coming up towards the end of the month and I am going to start your challenge then.  I am going to do $25, I have found a smaller thrift store where you can bag a bag for $5 and another one where on Tuesdays everything is $1.  I am going to utilize these two stores when I can and then go to the others.  My sister-in-law out-of-town told me about your site when she saw you on Nates show.  I didn’t know about the show and I had never heard about your site.  My sister-in-law said soon as she saw the show she thought about me because you reminded her of me.  Thank you for your inspiration, you have motivated me to put a limit on my thrift store shopping.  I love all of your posts.
