Thrifty Threads 365 Challenge – Part II

Fridays are usually my Thrifty Threads posts where I show you guys how I put together outfits using my thrift store finds, but you’ll notice there’s no photo of my fly threads.

That’s because my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge {a year of only purchasing thrift store clothing} officially ended yesterday. Yes, I made it through an entire year of only relying on thrift stores for my “new” clothes. I can honestly say I’ve had a blast on this challenge that was anything but challenging. I hope I’ve showed you guys how awesome secondhand shopping can really be. Your sense of style clearly doesn’t have to be determined by your wallet.

A few weeks ago I asked you guys if I should continue the challenge and you all agreed I should keep it going. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

The second installment of Thrifty Threads 365 will begin on October 1. This time around I’m switching things up by putting myself on a monthly budget, versus spending freely.

Do you think I should allot $25 or $50 a month for a shopping budget? Anyone who joined me on the challenge, how did you make out? Anyone willing to join part two of Thrifty Threads 365?

Yes Patrice, I would be willing to join you in this challenge. Unfortunately I do not live in as lovely of a city as you to find great thrifty pieces. After an apparel diet, I think this would be fun!

          Hi Tia,
Trust me, you can find thrift store treasures no matter where you live. I’ve posted about thrift shopping in a small town as well as thrifting online. It’s just a matter of finding a store near you that fits your style. But trust me, it’s possible 🙂

I’d go with $25 only because you found such great pieces over the past year. This year you can get more items to go with the ones you already have. I wish I could join you but I rarely find anything, anything nice in thrift stores around my way :o( . Good luck!

I think $50 is great starting point for the monthly budget twist. Good luck!

Also, I think I saw you a few weeks ago at the SA on 46th Street while I was shopping with my BF. I didn’t realize it was you until we were leaving lol

I think having a budget will heighten the ‘treasure hunt’ aspect.  Also, keep you from amassing lots of things, ‘just because they are cheap’.  Believe me, I have fallen victim to that one.  If you have a budget and just HAVE to exceed it, you could deduct it from the next month’s allowance.   My advice?  Don’t do that more than once or twice—your discipline will fall apart and your budget with it.   BTW, I am a grandmother and I lovelovelvoe your blog.

I went shopping at a Ross store in Pasadena….found a beauty! I snagged a cocktail dress for $6.99.  It’s a little hard to find things that fit since I gained a little weight, but this dress is perfect for an upscale evening look with a black suede jacket that I have.  I’ve been looking online for good shops and found a few.  I’ll post if I think they’re worthy of this site :o)

What about doing a dollar a day?  So December would allot $31 and February 28, etc.  Could spice it up a bit.

Thanks for joining the challenge. I’ve posted tons of thrift shopping tips on the blog so you can just search the archives. But my best tip is to just browse some thrift stores to find your favorite 2-3 shops. And just be patient with finding pieces. You can search Goodwill or Salvation Army’s website to see if there are any in your area (which I’m sure there are tons in the DMV area) or check out http://www.thethriftshopper.com/ . Just enter your zip code and they’ll tell you which thrift stores are in your area 🙂

This sounds great! I live in San Francisco Bay Area and have tons of thrift stores around. I already have my fav ones because I thrift often. I think $25 sounds pretty good.

Hey Patrice…I’m in girl.  That’s the only way I buy my clothes.  I love thrifting.  Anything to keep me going to thrift stores.  I need to bring my budget down to $50.00 a month.  Sometimes I go overboard.  I can’t help it.  I
