Thrifty Threads 365: 6 Month Update

Another month down {seriously, how is it April already?} and another month of my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge. If you’re new to the site and don’t know about TT365 {read up about it here}, it’s a year long quest where I can only purchase thrifted clothes and accessories. The only new items I can wear are undergarments {obviously, I’m not going to buy secondhand undies} and any gifted clothing I may receive. Oh, and did I mention I can only spend $50 a month? Yeah, only 50 bucks. Though I went over my clothing budget in January, I’ve been under budget every other month.

For March, I spent…$40. Yay, I didn’t go over budget and I managed to snag 10 items. Here are my thrift store scores for the month of March…

Goodwill Purse

I found a hieroglyphics style purse at Goodwill for $5, which I showed off in a what I wore post a few weeks ago. The bag doesn’t hold much but the design and gold clasp is simply gorgeous.

During a trip to the Goodwill on West 25th St, I walked away with a cobalt blue skirt {you’ll see it soon in a Thrifty Threads post} and a faux fur stole: $15 total.

Faux fur stole from Goodwill

My friend thought I was crazy for buying a faux fur on a day when it was unseasonably mild in NYC, but when you find something awesome at a thrift store, you’ve gotta get it, even if it is out of season.

My final thrift store trip of the month was to the Salvation Army on 46th St. This is usually my go-to destination for cute dresses but I’ve been striking out lately. However, I did find 7 items and they totaled 25 bucks!

Skinny jeans

I haven’t purchased jeans from a thrift store in over a year but this time I found a pair of skinny ankle length denim and skinny khakis.

vintage blouse from Salvation Army

This flowy, bright blouse will get some serious wear in the coming months.

t-shirts

A few months ago I made a YouTube video on how to cut an oversized t-shirt. Well, it’s been viewed close to 22,000 times, so I bought some more tees for upcoming tutorials.

Steve Madden booties, $12 at Goodwill

And last but not least is this pair of Steve Madden booties. I don’t know what I love more: the color, spiked heel or zipper trim. They’re a tad snug so these are just for days or nights when I won’t be doing much walking.

Thrift Tip:
To get more bang for your buck, shop at thrift stores on their half off days. You can rack up and get savings on top of savings. Salvation Army locations have Family Day on Wednesday, when most of the items are 50 percent off. For chain stores, sign up for their newsletters or follow them on Twitter so you’ll know when the discount days are. And for smaller secondhand shops, chat up the sales associates so you’re in the know about all upcoming sales.

If you joined the Thrifty Threads challenge {whether it’s for the full year or just a month or two} let me know how it’s going for you. Do you miss buying new clothes? Or what’s your favorite piece that I scored this month?

You know, ever since I started thrifting, it’s been really difficult to go back to retail. Oh who am I kidding? I don’t shop retail any more, unless it’s an absolute emergency – need an outfit right away for a specific occasion. Your tips have been invaluable!

I’m new to the site but I love this idea! I love thrift shopping and prefer it to retail sometimes – it’s just more fun. Great finds!

SAVER’S is my new favorite place. Each location supports a different charity. I also love the way they are organized!!

Looks great! I have to say, my faves are the purple heels and the blue blouse. Can’t choose between them. Great job and good luck in April! Thanks for your inspiration. I will have to get a photo of my free mother of the bride dress and post it on facebook. 🙂
