Thrifty Threads 365: 2014 Shopping Challenge

looking fly on a dime thrifty threads 365

Remember a few weeks ago when I asked you gals if I should continue my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge? Well, it was clear that it’s time for me to resurrect the no-new-clothes-for-a-year challenge.
I did it back in 2010 and 2011 {check out the final results here},and this is the first time I’ll do the challenge from January through December.
Just like the previous times, I can only purchase secondhand clothes for a year, but this time around, you can get involved.
Thrifty Threads 365 still has the same premise:
  • For a whole year {January 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014}, I can only purchase thrifted clothes and accessories. Of course I’m allowed to buy underwear, hosiery and accept gifts.
  • I can’t spend more than $50 each month.
  • At the end of each month, I’ll update you on how much I spent as well as my thrift shopping hauls.
  • I’ll also check in with weekly Thrifty Threads posts {like above!} to show you how I style my cheap chic finds.
So, what’s different?
This time there are ways for you {yes, YOU!} to get involved. Some of you have previously joined the Thrifty Threads 365 challenge by going on a shopping hiatus for a few months or even the full year. Of course I want you to still join in. Also:

  • Every month I’ll highlight someone who’s participating in Thrifty Threads 365. I want you to submit photos of how you style your looks, why you decided to join TT365 and what the experience is like.
  • Share your photos on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest and tag them with #ThriftyThreads365. This hashtag will be where I share my latest finds, updates and where I can see your pics. And also @ me on your pics {Twitter: @FlyonaDime and Instagram: @LookingFlyonaDime
  • I also want you guys to give me style challenges. If you have a look {celebrity, runway, hot trend, etc.}, you want me to recreate with my thrift store scores, let me know! I’m always up for a good challenge.
I can’t wait to get this challenge started on January 1 and I’m really excited for you guys to join in on the fun. If you’re intimidated about no new clothes for a full year, just start off slowly with a month or two. Trust me, it’s fun and really forces you to be creative and super resourceful. And your wallet will thank you for it. During my last TT365, I spent less than $500 on clothes for the entire year.
Be sure to weigh in below if you’re joining the challenge and/or if you have any looks you want me to recreate.

I am so excited to try this challenge out with you, and I’m going to do it the full year! New shoes will be my biggest temptation, but it’s not like I don’t already have enough anyway! Thanks for the opportunity, can’t wait!

I can’t go full in, since thrifting in Ohio is an entirely different experience than thrifting in New York! But I will try to locate some good shops locally, and some special items.

I am totally in this one! Do you think you can create a facebook group page for us to post our looks daily too? It will be a great support system.

Glad you’re joining!! I don’t really see a need for a FB group. I’m asking everyone to tag their photos with #ThriftyThreads365 across social media platforms so everyone can just follow the tag. And as mentioned above, once a month I’m going to highlight a participant’s style and discuss any difficulties they may be facing. With each weekly TT365 outfit post I do, I’ll remind readers to tag photos and let me know if they want to be showcased one month.

This is awesome! I really should participate. I’ve been thrift shopping a lot lately on ThredUp.com and my outfits are totally less than $20 most of the time. Happy TT365 2014! I want to visit a few of the GoodWill’s and the Hells Kitchen SA since its near my office.

Love it! Will try the challenge this year! Lost a lot of weight last year (yay!) and I need to replenish my wardrobe, without depleting my accounts! Thrifting is a bit of a challenge in Barbados, but I will give it a go

Forgot to add that I will need to buy some shoes. Between my recent foot issues, and the dog that ate my fave work pair, I actually NEED to buy a pair or two which will have to be new (thrifted shoes not a viable option here). Outside of that, I will try to stick to my no new clothes plan

I’m in. My teenage daughters will object, but then again maybe they won’t notice. Today I bought a pair of sandals at Goodwill- turquoise blue bandolinos with kitten heels. $4.99. Then I came home and found this challenge. 🙂
