Thriftspiration – Modern 80s Style

Thriftspiration is a weekly series that puts a spotlight on readers who share their secondhand shopping tips and fun ways to style thrifted finds.
how to thrift shop Name: Brittany
Location: Dallas, TX
Why do you thrift shop?
I opt for thrifting because I feel like it’s the best way to express my creative imagination. I was tired of being seen in similar pieces that other people had from popular stores at the mall. I aim to one day have an entire wardrobe of thrifted items. That way, I can almost guarantee no one will look like me stylewise. It was through thrifting that I started developing my style.
What inspired you to start thrifting?
80s and 90s sitcoms, like A Different World and The Cosby Show. I look at all of the fashion from that era for inspiration while adding my own spin on it.
Where are your favorite places to shop?
All outfits and accessories shown are completely thrifted from the Salvation Army and a shop called Thrift City here in Dallas.
Any tips for someone new to thrift shopping?
-Try something new! Find a great item but can’t see yourself wearing it? Just buy it and challenge yourself to wear it. It will open new avenues in your style you never knew you had. If it still doesn’t work for you, it won’t be much of a financial loss because you didn’t spend a lot of money on it.
-Have fun! Thrifting is an exciting experience each time you go. It may take a few visits before your eye is trained and your patience is built up, but when you find that one item that gets you hooked, you’re hooked for LIFE!
