Summer is winding down and instead of hitting a department store for your fall wardrobe, you may want to check a local thrift shop. Since the season is ending, they’re trying to move that summer merchandise. And this is the perfect time to scoop them up for a few bucks.

Below, check out five summer pieces you can thrift and styling tips to wear them through fall.

Shorts
While you may think of shorts as a strictly “summer” gear, don’t rule them out for next season. Hopefully we’ll have some warm-ish days and you can always layer a pair of tights under them. I actually love styling shorts with tights and a low ankle boot.

Tanks and Tees
These are the basic foundation pieces for a solid wardrobe. Whether you’re wearing a silky tank under your favorite blazer or a cotton t-shirt under a work appropriate cardigan, there’s nothing you can’t do with these must-haves.

Sandals may reign supreme when it’s hot out, but pumps also get some wear during the summer months. And these can be your footwear friends when fall arrives. A great nude pump will instantly make your bare legs look longer {when it’s not too brisk!} and a black pump with skinny jeans or trousers is always a good look.

Leggings
I have to confess, last summer I practically lived in leggings. They’re lightweight, look great with a flowy tunic and you can get them for next to nothing at a thrift shop. Though leggings are “basic,” they can be dressed up for a casual chic look with a long button down, sweater and riding boots. Solid colors can be mixed and matched, but don’t shy away from fun prints as well. If you’re afraid a pattern will make your legs look “big,” just opt for a darker color, which is more slimming.

Well, jeans aren’t specifically summer attire, they’re awesome year round. And due to this, you’ll always find a pair at the thrift store. Darker jeans are more versatile for day to night {and even if you work in a casual office}, don’t forget about bright denim, which you can absolutely wear throughout fall and even winter. Also, the same goes for white jeans. By now we all know you can wear white year round, it all depends on the material, not the color.

These are just a few of the summer clothes and accessories you can buy now and get some serious wear over the next few months.

Are you still buying summer items? What’s your favorite summer attire to wear in the fall or even winter?
