It’s no secret I’m an all-skinny-jeans-everything type of girl. But every now and then we should step out of our comfort zone and try something new. That’s been happening a lot lately when it comes to denim. Last month it was a pair of bootcut jeans that fit me like a glove and now I’m absolutely obsessed with these high waisted, relaxed jeans I scored from the Salvation Army for $3.

Sometimes you find a garment that just blows you away. Maybe it’s the actual garment and sometimes it’s your disbelief that a certain store carries such a cute piece.

That’s what happened when I went thrift shopping two weeks ago. I found this cobalt blue full midi skirt and fell in love. It was the color. The cut. The knee length split. And I was amazed to discover it was from Old Navy. Yes, Old Navy! I’ve never shopped at Old Navy {besides their dollar flip flops}, but I was surprised such a chic piece originated in their store.

What typically happens when I do an on-air fashion segment is I return the clothing. Well, during my last Today Show appearance, I loved a dress so much, I went back to the store and bought it.

While I gravitate towards bold prints and structured garments, sometimes it’s the most basic pieces that have a huge impact. That’s what happened with this H&M tank dress that was just $12.95. It goes with everything and has been in heavy rotation in my closet for the past two months.

When I go thrifting, I don’t typically seek out vintage garments in particular. I buy whatever speaks to my style and sometimes that’s a 70s pleated dress or a Zara necklace. But I do notice I subconsciously pick up vintage clothes and accessories. The pieces are just so unique and have superior craftsmanship, which is something you don’t get with fast fashion.

But how do you wear vintage in a way that’s not costume-y? This week’s Thrifty Threads is all about mixing vintage and contemporary pieces for a modern look.
