Thrifty Threads 365 Challenge – Now What?

My Thrifty Threads 365 challenge {a year long hiatus from purchasing new clothes, I can only thrift} will be over in just four weeks. I can’t believe almost a year has passed. When I started the project on September 1, 2010, I had no idea how it would turn out. I thought I’d be temped to shop but that wasn’t the case. Instead, I nabbed so many great items on my trips to secondhand stores that I realized I wasn’t missing out on anything.

With all of the awesome goodies I thrifted {from a $2 DSquared parka at the Salvation Army coat sale to a $1 Theory military jacket at the Goodwill Outlet to dresses and skirts for 35 cents a piece at the Housing Works Buy the Bag sale} I’ve purchased thousands of dollars in clothing and accessories for next to nothing. Besides saving money, I also wanted to show you guys {and the world!} how awesome thrift shopping can be and that style has nothing to do with your budget. The most “expensive” purchase I made in the past year was a pair of $30 Steve Madden wooden platforms and most of my clothing costs about $3-$4. And since I drop so little cash on my clothing, I’m not as attached to them as I used to be. I even gave away four bags of clothing to Goodwill when I recently moved. Material possessions are great, but they’re just things.

I’m considering extending the challenge for another year or maybe a few months or maybe I should up the ante a bit. I have no idea.

That’s where you guys come in. Let me know what you think. Should I keep this good thing going? Give myself a break? Start a different challenge? Start a group challenge?

Weigh in!

Thrifty Threads: Vintage Glam

After last week’s massive Housing Works haul where I snagged 29 pieces of clothing for $10, I was dying to wear one item in particular. My favorite piece had to be the polka dot halter dress my girl Danielle found for me. Though I’m not a fan of polka dots, the dress has such a vintage-y glam feel. And I decided to go all out with the glam factor and add the wide brim hat I also got from Housing Works.

Thrifty Threads – Head to Toe Thrift

Since most of my wardrobe is thrifted, there are times when I rock a head to toe thrift store look. And that’s exactly what happened this week. I wanted a nice pop of color so I chose my red, sweetheart neckline dress I recently bought from the Salvation Army. After picking out my accessories, I realized the entire ensemble was courtesy of thrift stores {minus an adorable straw purse my cousin gave me a few months ago}.

A Look Inside My Thrifted Closet

A reader recently emailed me and wrote, “Patrice, what percentage of your wardrobe is thrifted? I’d love to see your closet!”

I’ve been an avid thrifter for a few years and since I started my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge, thrift shopping is my only source of clothing. At this point, I’d say 60 percent of my wardrobe is courtesy of thrifting {here are a few of my favorite thrift stores}. And 60 percent is a conservative estimate. There are some items, like tops and dresses, that I thrift more than others.

I recently moved from my cramped Harlem studio and my new closet is a small walk in, which makes organization a bit easier.

Check out the pics below of how I organize my closet as well as how I store accessories using push pins and shower hooks.

If you need to know one thing about me {besides my love of thrifting}, it’s that I hate the heat. Like, I seriously hate it unless there’s a nearby body of water for me to cool off in. And unfortunately for me, it’s been pretty hot in NYC and pretty much throughout the country. One morning the Weather Channel described the temps as “dangerous and oppressive.” Geez!

On days when you’re practically sweating before you even step foot out of the door, what to wear can be a serious dilemma. I knew I’d be out all day last weekend at the Brooklyn Flea market and then I was heading straight to my homie Danielle’s {i.e. The Style & Beauty Doctor} Tweet Your Face Off party, so I wanted a look that was comfortable but still cute of course.
