Thrifty Threads – Leather Shorts

Posted On Friday, August 26th, 2011

Leather in the summer time? The two just didn’t seem to mix. However, I’ve been obsessed with leather shorts ever since my homie Danielle {aka The Style & Beauty Doctor} rocked a pair at a concert we went to last year. I’ve been on the look out for them at my fave thrift stores but never lucked up.

This week Loehmann’s invited me to an event and gave all bloggers in attendance a gift card. My Thrifty Threads 365 challenge only lets me wear new, non-thrifted clothing if it’s a gift. So I was excited when the first item I stumbled upon was a pair of leather shorts. Check out how I wore them along with my thrift store finds. And be sure to check back next week for more on what I found at the Loehmann’s event.

Thrifty Threads – Ladies Who Brunch

Posted On Friday, July 1st, 2011

My schedule can be unpredictable but there are two things in life that are {usually} guaranteed on a Sunday: church and brunch. A relaxing brunch is the perfect way to unwind before beginning another work week.

This week I caught up with my friend Johara from Luvin’ My Curves and we decided to hit up Kitchenette in Tribeca. The restaurant’s known for its down home cooking.

I wanted a ladylike frock that was church appropriate but also comfy for the near 90 degree temps, so rocked the little white dress I recently picked up from the Salvation Army.

But first, let’s talk about the food, which was beyond amazing.

Statement Shoes under $50

Posted On Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Ah, shoes. What girl doesn’t love them? Can you guess how much the average woman spends on a pair of shoes?
A. $99
B. $75
C. $49
D. $35

If you guessed C, then you’re right! The average woman spends $49 on shoes.

For some reason I thought most women would be in the $100 range when it comes to footwear. But apparently everyone wants to be fly on a dime. The “average” woman isn’t dropping stacks on Louboutins, Choos or Stuart Weitzman.

I know a lot of frugal fashionistas who’ll save on clothing but will spend a ton on footwear. The thing with “cheap” shoes is everyone assumes they’re poorly made. True, a pair of Forever 21 or Target stilettos are unlikely to hold up as well as a pair of red bottoms but mid range shoes are a great option.

You can easily find super affordable (i.e. less than $50), quality shoes at retailers like DSW, Aldo, Nine West and Macy’s. Personally, I’ve had a lot of success at DSW. And online retailers like piperlime.com and endless.com are equally great.

In honor of the women who on average spend $49 on shoes, check out the
options below. They’re statement making shoes and all $49 and under.

How much do you spend on heels? What are your favorite affordable shoe companies?

Thrifty Threads: Is that Velvet?

Posted On Friday, April 29th, 2011

Spring has finally reared her head in NYC and I’m loving it. The past week we’ve seen temps in the upper 60s, 70s and I’ve taken the opportunity to put away my tights and show some leg.

I tend to plan an outfit around one item {statement shoes, a dress, bold top, etc} and I knew I wanted to rock a cute skirt. I’m normally not a fan of velvet, but I found a number from the Salvation Army that I couldn’t refuse. The satin and velvet embroidered beauty is simply divine.

Thrifty Threads – Ladylike Lace

Posted On Friday, February 4th, 2011

I’m a serious thrift lover but it’s rare that I wear my thirfted finds from head to toe {clothing, shoes and accessories}. However, I switched that up this week and showed my true thrifty nature. From head to toe, my outfit costs $8. Everything I wore was purchased from secondhand stores, minus my opaque tights {I don’t buy thrifted under garments}.

I had a meeting to attend where it was imperative I show my personal sense of style. I put together the things I love the most: wide belt, girly skirt and lace.

{i love a full skirt with tons of movement}
