Versace for H&M debuts on November 19 and will include 30 pieces for women and 20 pieces for me. The line will arrive in 300 stores and fashionistas everywhere are sure to go crazy.

Designer Collaborations: Too Expensive?

Posted On Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Christian Siriano for Payless, $54.99. Lela Rose for Payless, $49.99

I’ve been noticing a trend lately at budget retailers like Payless, Target and H&M: higher prices…and I don’t like it. Last week I posted photos of Payless’ designer collaborations for spring and you guys loved most of the pieces but hated the cost. Dropping $60 for a pair of shoes at Payless was a bit baffling to some of you. 60 bucks isn’t a lot for gorgeous footwear, but for that price, you can go to Macy’s or DSW and possibly spend even less.

Zac Posen for Target: $79.99 and $69.99

I’m all for designers collaborating with affordable chains {it brings fashion to the masses and is still way cheaper than their upscale collections} but how high are the price tags going to rise? I wonder if in the near future Payless will have a designer line that retails close to $100?

And furthermore, there’s always so much hoopla surrounding the lines that everyone ends up wearing the same thing.

Lanvin for H&M dresses, $249 and $199

How much are you guys willing to spend at a budget retailer like Target, H&M or Payless? Do these prices defeat the purpose of their wallet-friendly purpose? Or are you willing to drop extra for the designer collections?

Goodwill Outlet Haul

Posted On Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I wasn’t able to make the Housing Works $20 sale, partially because I overslept {doh!} but also because I had a sizable thrifting haul a few days before. If you follow me on Twitter, you already saw a few Twitpics. It had been way too long since I’d made a trip to the Goodwill Outlet and I’m so glad I went.

If you’re new to Living Fly on a Dime, the Outlet I go to is in Long Island City and clothing is priced by the pound. $1.69 per pound to be exact. See if there’s a Goodwill Outlet in your area.

I walked away with 16 pieces for $15.21 price, which averages out to less than $1 per item. I found some really great, colorful pieces to add to my wardrobe, including an Angora sweater from Express, Nicole Miller top with an embellished neckline, Topshop vest and more.

Check out some of my favorite picks as well as a tip for thrift shopping when the weather’s bad.

Lanvin for H&M: So what, who cares?

Posted On Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Lanvin for H&M debuts this Saturday and fashionistas everywhere are rejoicing. However, I’m not one of them. Despite the fact that I can’t shop for a year {due to my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge}, my eyes tend to glaze over at the thought of another designer collabo with a budget chain.

The bold hued and ruffled dresses, coats, shoes and jewels are beautiful to look at but I’m not in love with the prices or how everyone and their mama’s going to be rocking the same outfits.

I have a major problem with budget retailers selling items that are department store priced. I understand it’s a designer collaboration and not even close to the price of “real” Lanvin but I can’t see paying $350 for any item at H&M when their clothes are typically a tenth of that price. For 350 bucks I’d rather hit up Macy’s or Nordstrom.

{Black coat, $349. Floral dress, $249. Black tulle dress, $249 and pink necklace, $40}

Price points aside, since folks are clamoring for this collection, won’t everyone end up wearing the same pieces? This just reminds me of last year’s Roberto Cavalli for H&M collection. People stood in line for hours for pieces that sold out in minutes, and at holiday parties and on New Year’s Eve, I saw at least three women with identical outfits and accessories.

Though I have some issues with designer collaborations at stores like H&M and Target, I appreciate that designer fashion has become accessible to all and fashion houses are acknowledging customers who can’t afford their high-end line.

Are you looking forward to the collection? Do you care if you see other women wearing the same clothing and accessories as you? How do you feel about designer collaborations and how much would you be willing to pay for the pieces?
