top moments at essence music fest

If you're not familiar with Essence Music Festival or you've never attended the 3-day event, you should change that ASAP. The New Orleans based festival has been going down for 19 years and by day it's home to empowering seminars and by night, features some of the world's top musical acts.I had the pleasure of attending EMF last week {my second year in a row} and in between hosting my Best Dressed Madame event and stuffing my face {try the chargrilled oysters at  Acme Oyster House and share a platter of fried seafood at Deanie's}, I took in shows, a few events and even got in a bit of shopping. Take a peek at my top 5 Essence Fest moments, including stellar performances that blew me away and how I scored a unique purse for just $20.

essence music fest beauty suitesThough most people associate Essence Music Festival with music and the amazing food of New Orleans, there were quite a few beauty events going on. So many beauty soirees went down that I almost didn't have enough room in my suitcase. The pic below shows how jam packed my bag was of goodies I scored from some of my favorite brands. My luggage weighed in at 47.5 pounds and undoubtedly, half of that was hair and body products. And of course all of the products are super affordable.

Essence Music Festival fashion event

Yesterday I gave you the inside dish on the vintage dress I wore to my Best Dressed Madame soiree while I was at Essence Music Festival in New Orleans and now it's time for the event recap. The night was full of fun, giveaways and some amazing costumes. Hosted at May Baily's Bar at the Dauphine Hotel, we took a cue from the past to come up with some cheeky games. The bar used to be a brothel {they still have a red light on outside!} so we asked ladies to come dressed up in feathers, boas, glam gowns or anything that made them feel sexy.

Essence Music Festival, State of StyleFor years I had been trying to make it to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival. I always heard nothing but great things about the 3-day event and it's always around my birthday. Last year, I finally made it to EMF and it was everything and more! Parties, great music, food and cheap alcohol, what's not to love? And of course I'm heading back this year.
But if you haven't booked your flight or hotel, you're not totally out of luck. Using your sense of style can actually help you win round trip airfare for two, four night accommodations at a New Orleans hotel, two tickets for each night of the Essence Fest concerts {the lineup includes some of my faves, like Mint Condition, Emeli Sande and Beyonce}, two VIP Experience tickets and ground transportation.

Two weeks ago, I celebrated my birthday at the Essence Music Festival. If you don't know about EMF or if you've never been, you need to change that ASAP. It's obviously a music fest, but it's so much more. It's a gathering of folks who are ready to experience food, fun, day and night parties and any other foolishness New Orleans has to offer. It was hands down one of the best trips I've been on and I plan to attend next year. But anyway, back to fashion...packing is always an issue, but for this trip it was especially tough. I needed items that were casual enough for the day {and the humid temps} but threads that were also party appropriate for any events I decided to hit up.
