Thrifty Threads: Vintage Glam

Posted On Friday, July 29th, 2011

After last week’s massive Housing Works haul where I snagged 29 pieces of clothing for $10, I was dying to wear one item in particular. My favorite piece had to be the polka dot halter dress my girl Danielle found for me. Though I’m not a fan of polka dots, the dress has such a vintage-y glam feel. And I decided to go all out with the glam factor and add the wide brim hat I also got from Housing Works.

Thrifty Threads – Ladies Who Brunch

Posted On Friday, July 1st, 2011

My schedule can be unpredictable but there are two things in life that are {usually} guaranteed on a Sunday: church and brunch. A relaxing brunch is the perfect way to unwind before beginning another work week.

This week I caught up with my friend Johara from Luvin’ My Curves and we decided to hit up Kitchenette in Tribeca. The restaurant’s known for its down home cooking.

I wanted a ladylike frock that was church appropriate but also comfy for the near 90 degree temps, so rocked the little white dress I recently picked up from the Salvation Army.

But first, let’s talk about the food, which was beyond amazing.

Thrifty Threads: Dress Up

Posted On Friday, June 24th, 2011

The weather in NYC has been so schizo lately. Though we experienced summer like temps in spring, off and on rainy days and nights were pretty common this week.

So what’s a girl to do on a lazy Saturday when the weather won’t cooperate? She plays dress up of course. And that’s exactly what I did.

You guys know how I learned to walk in heels? I would play dress up with my grandma’s heels. I’d flop around the house in her size 9′s. I couldn’t wait to grow up so I could wear pretty, “pointy” shoes like her.

Fast forward 25 years and I have a serious love for tulle. It’s ultra girly and super feminine. When I spied this blush skirt at the Goodwill in Greenwich Village I knew I had to have it. This is the perfect piece to slip on when you want to have a little fun.

Statement Shoes under $50

Ah, shoes. What girl doesn’t love them? Can you guess how much the average woman spends on a pair of shoes?
A. $99
B. $75
C. $49
D. $35

If you guessed C, then you’re right! The average woman spends $49 on shoes.

For some reason I thought most women would be in the $100 range when it comes to footwear. But apparently everyone wants to be fly on a dime. The “average” woman isn’t dropping stacks on Louboutins, Choos or Stuart Weitzman.

I know a lot of frugal fashionistas who’ll save on clothing but will spend a ton on footwear. The thing with “cheap” shoes is everyone assumes they’re poorly made. True, a pair of Forever 21 or Target stilettos are unlikely to hold up as well as a pair of red bottoms but mid range shoes are a great option.

You can easily find super affordable (i.e. less than $50), quality shoes at retailers like DSW, Aldo, Nine West and Macy’s. Personally, I’ve had a lot of success at DSW. And online retailers like piperlime.com and endless.com are equally great.

In honor of the women who on average spend $49 on shoes, check out the
options below. They’re statement making shoes and all $49 and under.

How much do you spend on heels? What are your favorite affordable shoe companies?

Thrifty Threads – I Hate My Legs?

Posted On Friday, June 3rd, 2011

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. I hate shorts. Well, at least I used to anyway. Though I love a skirt or dress, I just felt my legs looked chunky and stumpy in shorts. Until last summer, I hadn’t worn shorts in years.

I loved a pair of Banana Republic shorts I thrifted, but I wasn’t super confident about wearing them. However, that’s all changed this year. I actually wore a pair of shorts and felt super confident. Maybe it’s a product of my NY Lean 25 workouts or I’m just letting go of foolish insecurities, but either way, I felt good.

The NYC weather decided to skip spring and head straight for summer, so this was the perfect week to show off my gams. I opted for an easy breezy look with some fly accessories to top it off. The clothing costs less than $2 since I thrifted them from the Goodwill Outlet where items are priced at $1.69/lb. But the accessories were the real show stoppers.
