Real Vs. Fake

Fake Designer Bags I came across an interesting study published by MIT on whether people can distinguish luxury items from the counterfeits.

The verdict: Most people couldn’t tell the real from the fake, but instead relied on the social cues and status of the person carrying or wearing the item to determine its authenticity. Basically, if a well put together, affluent looking woman is carrying a Louis Vuitton, most people would assume it’s legit.

Also, 46% of people who buy fake designer items end up buying the real version shortly after.

I’ve never really been of a knock-off person, though I did have a faux Burberry scarf years ago. I wonder if people assumed it was fake?

So where do you stand on the “reals” versus the “fakes”? Great way to save a buck or why bother unless you can afford the real deal?

I’m not much of a knock-off girl, but I can totally see how people can assume whether your designer item is real or fake on social cues. I also think that certain items (like the monogram LV or Gucci) are more likely to be seen as “fake” than their non-logo counterparts, that why I try to stay away from them as much as possible 🙂

Here’s my motto: you may be able to fool other people with a fake item, but you’ll never fool yourself. Save your money and then get the real deal.
