Reader Submission: Thrift Store Treasure

I received an email from Ashleigh, a faithful Living Fly on a Dime reader, and she wanted to share an amazing thrifted find. Not too long ago I tweeted about the Goodwill on 23rd St. in NYC and after a visit to the newly renovated store, Ashleigh scored an Oscar-worthy, best dressed frock.

Check out her story below.

I found this black lace dress on a random trip to Goodwill last Saturday. I immediately fell in love with it but at first glance didn’t think it would be flattering on me. To my surprise this dress fit like it was made for me! I don’t know who the designer is but it had a sample sticker in the inside that said “Dare to Bare”? Probably the name of the dress? At any rate, it is a classic do anything, go anywhere LBD.. perfect for cocktails or a first date! Now, at $24.99 it was a bit of a thrifter’s splurge but this dress is priceless. If I die tomorrow tell them to bury me in this dress…. and a pair of Miu Miu pumps!

But wait, there is more to this fashion fairytale. Sunday night I wore this dress, with my gun metal silver Jessica Simpson peep toes and an iridescent clutch to the Refinery 29 Oscar’s Watch Party at The W Hotel Union Square. They had a best dressed contest among the attendees and guess who was a Top 5 finalist??? It was me, in my $24.99 Goodwill dress. Although I lost to some chick wearing what I’ll call an “interestingly unglamorous”  Alexander Wang (so she said) boho tunic, it was such an honor to be recognized out of the
hundreds of women in the room…in the most fashionable city in the world…in a piece that was authentic to my style and my wallet.

I am so proud of this dress! Thank you so much for sharing all of your thrifting tips for they have changed my life. Seriously!

Love the dress Ashleigh! A girl can never go wrong with a lace LBD. If you guys have any amazing thrift store treasures you’d like to share, feel free to email me {contact form above}!
