Homemade Beauty Products Pt. 2

Last week I introduced you to some homemade beauty products straight from your pantry {baking soda and honey as facial scrubs, coconut milk as a conditioner, etc} and the list of food items that double as beauty treatments could go on and on. However, I wanted to focus on one affordable, homemade version of Shu Uemura’s Cleansing Oil.

The oils start at $28 for a five ounce bottle and claim to improve texture and leave your skin feeling moisturized and looking radiant. The idea of using oil to clean your skin may seem a bit foreign, but the Oil Cleansing Method has been around for years and people {self included} swear by it’s benefits of soft, blemish free, bright skin.

If you don’t want to shell out a ton of cash for Shu Uemura’s oil cleansers, you can make an at home version with castor oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, grape seed oil, etc.

It’s really trial and error when it comes to finding the right oil combination for your skin. {I have oily, acne prone skin and I use an equal combination of castor oil and olive oil}.

How the oil cleansing method works:

  • Rub a quarter size amount of the oil in your hands.
  • Massage the oil in to your face. It not only removes dirt, but makeup as well.
  • Rinse a clean washcloth in hot water. The water needs to be hot enough so the steam opens up your pores.
  • Place the hot towel over your face and let it rest there until it cools.
  • Rinse the towel in hot water again and apply it to your face. Repeat twice.
  • Rinse the towel in cold water and gently wipe your face in an upward motion.

Your skin should feel soft and look refreshed. The heat from the towel ensures no remnants of the oil are left behind. To see the Oil Cleansing Method in action, check out the short video below, courtesy of the Moptop Maven.

You can purchase natural oils from your local health food store or order online from Vitamin Shoppe or From Nature with Love.

Has anyone ever tried the oil cleansing method? Or does cleaning your face with oil freak you out?

I tried OCM a few months ago, it seemed to work well in the beginning but I had some medication changes plus the stress of buying my first home and it was just too much, my face freaked out! I reverted back to my old face wash, but I would like to give the OCM another shot

Trying the OCM again is definitely worth a shot. I’m thinking of add an over the counter cleanser to my cleansing routine also, something for those days when/if I have a stubborn breakout.

This is a really interesting video. I haven’t seen this way of cleaning your face before. It makes sense, though. Many cleansers are so harsh and they leave your face peeling and dry. This definitely looks better.
