Fall Fashion Week Trends You Can Thrift Right Now

New York Fashion Week has come to a close and it’s become clear what we’ll be wearing this fall. Sure, you can cop these pieces in a few months at high end department stores or you can thrift them right now! Fashion is always cyclical, so the hot new styles we just saw on the runways may be at your nearest thrift shop.

Here are four fall fashion trends you can thrift. Not only will you save a ton of cash, but the clothes are sure to be  more unique.

Statement Earrings

Starting with accessories, it’s all about the statement earring. The dainty studs will always have a place in everyone’s arsenal, but what’s really hot is the bold earring. Before checking out at the thrift shop, check the jewelry counter to see what’s up for grabs. I find thrift shopping for jewelry to be hit or miss and quantities can be limited, so always check the jewelry selection before shopping for the clothes. Since there’s less to go around, you want to get first dibs if possible.

Bold Fur

Not just any fur, but big bold fur is what’s on trend for fall 2015. The coats are sure to grab anyone’s attention. Just think of Cookie from Empire. I actually thrifted a faux fur at the Salvation Army coat sale that’s right on trend for fall. The great thing about thrift shops is that many sell outerwear year round, so you can get a serious jump on your gear for next season. I remember when a friend laughed at me for thrifting a fur collar in the middle of May. I’ve gotten a lot of wears out of that fur collar this winter. My motto: if you see it, love it, the price is right, buy it. You can always wear it later.
Ponchos/Capes

So if you’re going to buy one trendy piece of outerwear, it should be this. But like any “trend,” it’s been done a million times before, so check the racks at your favorite thrift or vintage shops for these gems.
Culottes

I know culottes can be a super tricky trend. I mean, look at the length and the cut?! But what do I always say? If you’re on the fence about a trend, try it on the cheap at a thrift shop. And if you don’t love it, no biggie, you haven’t invested a ton of money. Stick with a hem that doesn’t flare too much, a solid hue {versus a busy print!} and pair with a nude pump that  elongates your legs. Who knows, your mom or grandma might even have a pair, so raid her closet!
Instead of looking at thrift stores as a dump for someone else’s castoffs, think of them as a potential gold mine of trends some people pay top dollar for at major department stores.
What trends are you looking forward to? Do you find a lot of the current trends at thrift shops or even in your mom’s closet?
