Thrifty Threads 365 – Seven Month Update

Thrifty Threads 365, looking fly on a dime

Another month down and another month of my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge. If you’re new to the site and don’t know about TT365 {read up about it here}, it’s a year long quest where I can only purchase thrifted clothes and accessories. The only new items I can buy are undergarments {obviously, I’m not going to buy secondhand undies} and I may wear new gifted items. Oh, and did I mention I can only spend $50 a month? Yeah, only 50 bucks.

I’ve consistently stayed under my budget, except for one month, and for April I continued to stay on track. I only spent $40 for the entire month. I’ve actually been so busy over the past few months that I haven’t had time to shop, which is a great thing for my wallet, but it sucks for my closet.

Though I prefer dresses and heels, this past month I didn’t find any frocks or pumps. But I did score some cute tops, shorts and a purse. Check out a few of my top thrifted picks for the month of April, including an item that only costs $4, but the original price tag says it was worth $120.

Salvation Army Coat Sale This Weekend

Posted On Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

It’s that time of year again…the Salvation Army coat sale in NYC is upon us. If you weren’t able to make the first one in October, do yourself a favor and check it out this Saturday, 11/5.

I hit up two of the sales last year {here and here} and walked away with a ton of coats at great prices, including a DSquared parka for $2, a faux mink for $10, leather Banana Republic trench for $20 and leather jacket for just 10 bucks.

With such great prices, of course the competition’s stiff and folks line up an hour before the sale to get a good spot in line. But can you blame them? The room is lined with racks on racks on racks of leather jackets, furs {faux and real}, bombers, trenches, wool coats and more. To really prepare yourself, check out my tips for shopping the Salvation Army coat sale.

The next coat sales are December 3 and January 7. If you really want to get the best deals, wait until the last sale in January. Prices are drastically slashed, usually under $10.

Details:
Salvation Army Coat Sale
536 West 46th St.
New York, NY 10036
Doors open at 9 a.m., people generally start lining up at 8.

In Store: Target Spring Offerings

Posted On Monday, April 18th, 2011

Ah, Target. I went there to pick up contact lens solution but I had to make a quick dip in to the clothing and accessories sections…and I’m so glad I did. I found a a lot of crave-worthy sale and clearance items.

A ton of the Go International pieces were on clearance. So if you’re in the market for a flirty sheer or lace dress, now is the time to hit Target up. You can rock them now with a cardigan and all the way through summer.Directly across from the dresses, was a rack full of floppy hats. Perfect for protecting your face and pretty tresses from the intense sun. And better yet, they were all just $12.99.

Black Friday Shopping Tips

Posted On Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Thanksgiving is only two days away and that means Black Friday will be here faster than you can say gobble gobble. I’ve never participated in this “shopping holiday” but I’ve compiled a few tips to take advantage of the door buster deals. Of course you want to have a solid list and budget, plot out your shopping route and dress comfortably, but below are a few more tips to make your Black Friday excursion go as smoothly as possible.

  • Is It Really a deal?

It’s easy to assume that something is a major sale if the store tells you so, but do some quick research ahead of time. That flat screen Toshiba that you’re lining up at 3am for may only be 50 bucks off the original price. Some stores honor price matches, so if a competitor is offering that flat screen for $100 less, speak to a store manager about matching the price.

  • Prioritize Purchases

Toys, electronics and jewelry tend to be the first items to go. So if you’re looking for a game you promised your niece or nephew, scope that out before you go looking for a chunky cardigan or over the knee boots.

  • Research Your Electronics

On such a hectic day, customer service isn’t exactly at it’s peak. If you need to ask a sales associate about the difference between two digital cameras, understand that you’re not going to get the attention {or any attention} you need during such chaos. Once again, do your research ahead of time on multiple products so you can make an informed decision if your first choice is sold out.

  • Stay at Home

Some people just don’t have the patience to deal with crowds on Black Friday. If that’s you, shop from the comfort of your home. Some of the sales aren’t as deeply discounted, but they’re still great bargains and if you’re shopping for gift, you can ship it directly to the recipient. Some stores even have pre-Black Friday sales that are going on right now {like Amazon, Best Buy and Target} and Cyber Monday sales always offer super savings.

For a list of Black Friday sales, ads and circulars, visit TheBlackFriday.com and check here for Cyber Monday deals. For last minute announcements and sales, follow your favorite stores and websites on Twitter.

Nina Shoes Debuts a Light Up Bootie

Posted On Thursday, September 16th, 2010

When I attended Kitty Bradshaw’s Blogiversary earlier this year, one of the highlights of the night was being introduced to Nina Shoes. The affordable line had swoon-worthy shoes from animal prints wedges to sparkly stilettos to comfy, chic flats.

But the shoe of the night was the Shostopper and it’s name is pretty fitting. With a five inch heel, the booties light up. Yes, it has purple, green and blue LED lights that sparkle when the button on the sole is turned on. These are definitely for the girl who wants to make a statement.

To get an idea of what the shoes look like in action, peep the one minute video below.
