Revamp Your Closet: Film a Channel 11 Segment with Me

Posted On Thursday, May 17th, 2012

You guys may know that I’m the Savvy Shopper reporter for Pix 11 News in NYC. And I’ve got a great opportunity for one lucky reader/viewer to appear on camera with me for an upcoming segment.

If you have a closet full of clothes that are just collecting dust and taking up space, why not revamp your wardrobe? I’m looking for a woman who will let me go through her closet and tell her how she can cash in on those old clothes. During the Pix 11 segment, we’ll find creative ways so you can get rid of the old and free up some cash for a new wardrobe! Updating your style on a budget is something we can all use, especially with the upcoming summer months.

You should:

  • Live in NYC
  • Be available to film Tuesday {5/22} morning and afternoon
  • Allow myself and the camera person access to your home and closet
  • Have awesome, gently worn clothes you need to get rid of

Why I Prefer Forever 21 Jeans Over Designer Denim

Posted On Monday, May 7th, 2012

I’m a little more than half way through my Thrifty Threads 365 challenge and people always ask if I miss shopping for brand new clothes. And I usually say no. Thrift stores have provided me with every item, whether it’s trendy or classic, that I need. But there are some things I’ve been missing: Forever 21 jeans. I can walk past Macy’s, H&M or any boutique with no problem, but Forever 21 tempts me every time. Let me explain…

As much as I love a flirty dress, I adore skinny jeans, especially black ones. They’re a simple canvas you can dress up or down in minutes. And since I love jeans so much, I’ve worn them in a ton of brands, from Seven to Citizens of Humanity to Joe’s and more. But I find they all share the same characteristic: the dreaded crotch rip. You know what I’m talking about. It’s when your jeans start to rip and get frayed from the friction of your thighs.

Black Friday Survival Guide

Posted On Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

In addition to blogging here for Looking Fly on a Dime, I’m a contributing writer for the fashion site, StyleBlazer. Of course I had to share a piece I wrote for them on Black Friday.

Black Friday is almost here. You’ve been gearing up for this all year and reading up on the stores you want to attack {check out BlackFriday.com for the major retailers’ sales}. That’s great but now you need a survival guide for the big day. Having a game plan can mean the difference between snagging a must have item and walking away empty-handed.

Here are some last-minute tips to make your Black Friday shopping a success.

Shop Solo:
Lets admit it, sometimes us ladies like to shop in groups. Well, not today. Split off from your chicas so you can divide and conquer. When you go to one store and she goes to another, it’s like you’re in two places at once. If you strike out at your store maybe she’ll find something at hers. And vice versa. Just communicate with each other ahead of time and while you’re shopping so you can tell the other what you’re in the market for.

Salvation Army Coat Sale This Weekend

Posted On Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

It’s that time of year again…the Salvation Army coat sale in NYC is upon us. If you weren’t able to make the first one in October, do yourself a favor and check it out this Saturday, 11/5.

I hit up two of the sales last year {here and here} and walked away with a ton of coats at great prices, including a DSquared parka for $2, a faux mink for $10, leather Banana Republic trench for $20 and leather jacket for just 10 bucks.

With such great prices, of course the competition’s stiff and folks line up an hour before the sale to get a good spot in line. But can you blame them? The room is lined with racks on racks on racks of leather jackets, furs {faux and real}, bombers, trenches, wool coats and more. To really prepare yourself, check out my tips for shopping the Salvation Army coat sale.

The next coat sales are December 3 and January 7. If you really want to get the best deals, wait until the last sale in January. Prices are drastically slashed, usually under $10.

Details:
Salvation Army Coat Sale
536 West 46th St.
New York, NY 10036
Doors open at 9 a.m., people generally start lining up at 8.

Goodwill Fashion Show

Goodwill fashion show, looking fly on a dime

{I’m making a weird face, but everyone else looks amazing!}

Earlier this month, Goodwill contacted me about participating in a fashion show for disabled workers. Of course I jumped at the opportunity. You guys know I love Goodwill {my favorite locations in NYC are the 23rd St. Gramercy store and the Goodwill Outlet}. But I also love that the secondhand chain employs individuals with disabilities. October is National Disability Awareness month so Goodwill teamed up with NYC’s Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities to put on a show.

Goodwill wanted myself and four other bloggers to create looks for disabled employees. We pulled clothes from local Goodwill stores so the workers could have career appropriate attire. I shopped at the three-story Goodwill in East Harlem {2231 Third Ave.} to dress my two models, Craig and Yesenia.

One of Craig’s favorite colors is blue so I wanted to put him in a bright top, dressy slacks and a patterned tie. And Yesenia preferred black pants, which are totally work appropriate, but I  gave her a stand out top, some accessories and nude pointy toe pumps.
